Language Barrier Case Study
A Korean patient was picking up the prescription in the pharmacy I work at. This was a new medication for him with a very complicated dosing regimen. When a new medication is being picked up, the computer prompts the technician at the pick up station to ask the patient if the patient has any questions about the new medication. The patient was asked that question, but because of the language barrier did not really understand the question and the technician took the answer to that question as a “no”. Couple of hours later this patient comes back with his prescription, pointing to a package, saying he does not know how to take his new medication. The technician let the pharmacist know that the patient requires counseling on a new medication. The pharmacist first attempt to counsel a patient on his dosing regimen was not successful due to the language barrier. The issue in this situation was the presence of the cultural differences between the patient and the pharmacist that prevented the pharmacist from providing an appropriate medication counseling. The cultural difference in this case was the presence of the language barrier. …show more content…
The pharmacist asked her to translate for the patient during the counseling session. I think the pharmacist did a very good job at trying to resolve the issue of the language barrier. I believe that cultural differences, like language, customs, beliefs, and social status should not prevent a healthcare professional from providing a good patient care. Therefore, it is very important for every health professional to be culturally competent, understand cultural differences, and know how to approach patients of a different ethnic, racial, religious, or social

    If the medication was not an antidepressant it might be different. If the patient is given the wrong strength of medicine then it might affect how he might act on the plane of given to him. Not only would he jeopardize his safety but the safety of the other passengers on the plane. If that happens then the office would be in jeopardy of a law suit or worse and it would fall on both Dr. Williams and Jerry also it would affect the pharmacist that would have prescribed the medication. I think that the more severe the medication might be then it will have a different requirement on how to prescribe the medication.     When Lia continues to have frequent seizures while being on the medication her doctors start prescribing other medication for a less serious type of seizure. When this change in medication doesn't improve Lia`s seizures, her doctor starts prescribing her multiple drugs simultaneously for the seizures plus antibiotics, antihistamines, and bronchodilating drugs due to the lung and ear infections frequently accompanied by seizures (Fadiman, p. 46). “These medications were prescribed in varying combinations, varying amounts, and varying numbers of times a day, the prescription changed twenty-three times in less than four years.’’ (Fadiman, p. 46). This quickly got confusing to Lia`s parents because due to the language barrier they were not instructed correctly on how to give Lia the correct dosages. Even if someone were present to translate instructions when a bottle was handed to Lia`s parents there was no way of knowing that they would remember them and since the prescription frequently changed it would have been difficult for even a English speaking parent to follow correctly. (Fadiman, p. 46) When doctors begin to notice that the seizures are still occurring they start thinking about the possibility that Lia`s parents were either confused or lying about the medication and ultimately the problem was both. (Fadiman, p. 47-48) The Lee`s would give Lia incorrect drugs because they were being stored in medicine bottles with incorrect names. They would also fail to give Lia the correct dosages because some medication needed to be measured or cut into fractions (Fadiman, p. 47). The Hispanic population increased from 35.3 million to 50.5 million in 2010. The intention of this paper is to increase the awareness and understanding of cultural competency and cultural sensitivity toward the Hispanic culture. Cultural competency cannot be overemphasized as it plays an imperative role in the quality of care that is given to different cultures.
