Lady Chattterley's Lover
Discuss Lady Chatterley's need for attention or the need to be loved.
Is she justified having a sexual relationship with other men and more so the gardener? Use details to explain your opinion.
As much as this is a very sexually explicit novel in being so graphic, Lawrence makes a symbolic reference with the love between Connie and Mellors. It is an analogy. You may want to note that he represents the lower class that was used by the mine barons to prostitute the English countryside, making it ugly and barren. Mellors now lives as a gardener for Clifford, but also uses his wife for sex. What details show this symbolic reference that Mellors is a foil to the Chatterley's pollution free land? There is a symbolic reference to Clifford's wheel chair. Can you detect it? What is the significance that Mellors is fertile and Clifford is barren? Who really has the upper hand in this class driven society? Note the way Connie and Mellors speak. Your research will show you this deeper meaning to the story. If you knew that your husband was cheating on you, would you leave him? Do you believe it would be right for him to judge you for being with another man while he himself is with other women? For these reasons and a few more, it can be argued that Daisy Buchanan should leave her husband, Tom Buchanan, for Jay Gatsby. Tom Buchanan is racist, misogynistic, and full of himself. I was very flabbergasted when the narrator answered Gertie’s call. Instead of letting Gertie know how she felt about Gertie’s ignorance to organic food, she agreed to take her order. She seemed like the person that would defend her hard work by telling her that she didn’t want to give her the produce. We see later that she is indeed aggravated that “Gertie doesn’t understand organic,” and commences cutting down trees. What aggravated me was that despite their hurtful comments towards her, the narrator still provided them with vegetables occasionally.…

In the A Thousand Acres, book one is filled with many characters developing. Ginny’s narration gives us a clear view of each character through her perspective. She shows how situations can change a person. She’s the perfect daughter and housewife. She’s humble and obedient. She lets the need of others take priority of her own. While she takes care of Rose’s, her dad Larry’s, and her own households, she doesn’t see this as a problem. She sees it as a need for the survival of their family farm. "One of the many benefits of this private project, I thought at the time, was it showed me a whole secret world, a way to have two lives, to be two selves." (Smiley 26). This quote’s talking about when Ginny was trying to get pregnant without letting anyone know that she was trying again. This was one thing that she could control in her life. Everything else she did in her life was for her family. Her life before she met Ty, her husband, was controlled by her abusing dad Larry, and after she got married to Ty, it's controlled by him. He was always making her feel uncomfortable. This is the only thing in her life that’s fully under her control. This kind of gives her a feeling of power and being in control of her life.…

“‘Oh!” cried Mary, ‘is he going away tomorrow? I am so glad!’” Even though she is glad for a reason that may seem selfish, I think that her excitement shows relief in the fact that she doesn’t have to fear someone will take the secret garden away from her. If the garden were to be taken away from her, she should believe she’d have nothing to be happy about anymore and would be extremely upset that her special happy place was gone. “‘Might I,’ quavered Mary, ‘might I have a bit of earth?’”…

    2) The relationship between Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Hopewell is that Mrs. Freeman’s husband works for Mrs. Hopewell and they are friends and every morning they sit and gossip and eat breakfast together. Mrs. Hopewell likes to call Mrs. Freeman a “lady” and that her family is a bunch of “good country people” (185). This might just be because Mrs. Freeman agrees with every single thing Mrs. Hopewell says, and also says, “I always said so myself” (186).Their names are significant because Mrs. Hopewell likes to hope for new things in her life. “Nothing is perfect!” is one of her favorite sayings that she says constantly (185). Mrs. Hopewell doesn’t like to think that her daughter will ever grow up, she has thought this way since her daughter had a bad accident; “she thought of her still as a child because it tore her heart to think instead of the poor stout girl…
