Experimental Report for EvolutionLab
Instructions
Darwin proposed that for a trait to evolve through natural selection, three conditions were necessary:
1. the trait must affect survivorship and/or reproduction (fitness),
2. there must be variation among individuals for the trait, and
3. the variation in the trait must be heritable.
In EvolutionLab, beak size is a trait that affects survival. Birds with small beaks are more efficient at utilizing small soft seeds whereas birds with large beaks are better at utilizing large hard seeds. Therefore, when more small seeds available, birds with small beaks have a higher rate of survival than birds with large beaks. Conversely, when more large seeds available, birds with large beaks have a higher rate of survival than birds with small beaks. Thus, beak size satisfies the first condition listed above. In EvolutionLab we can control for the variation in beak size and the heritability of beak size. This allows us to experimentally test Darwin’s second and third points listed above.
In this assignment, we want you to design and carry out experiments to test points 2 and 3 listed above. In your experiments, be sure to include a control (no effect) and a treatment (effect is present). You can use one of the islands for a control group and the other island as a treatment group. The inputs for variability and heritability are the two factors to be investigated. Vary only one factor at a time so that you can more easily interpret your results. You can vary other factors, such as precipitation, but you should use the same values for the control and treatment groups for any single experiment.

In George Mivart’s ‘Genesis of Species’, Mivart thoroughly reviews Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Mivart concludes that Darwin’s theory of natural selection is flawed because it cannot account for all of the mechanics of inheritance, specifically the initial developments of useful characteristics. He disputes that natural selection can account for the passing of negative or unnecessary traits, or for individualized traits occurring in only one species. He also asks how certain developments could occur without saltations, an idea absent in Darwin’s theories, but prominent in many of his contemporaries’. To illustrate these issues with natural selection, Mivart uses giraffes, insects that mimic other things in nature, fish, kangaroos, and whales as examples, which I will summarize below.…

Evolution is a natural process in which animals adapt to their surroundings so that they may survive. There are many variables in an animal’s environment that influence its evolution. The purpose of this lab is to examine finches from the island of Darwin and the island of Wallace and how the island size, finches’ clutch size and the precipitation on both islands directly affect the finches’ beak size and population. I believe that a larger island size, larger clutch size and high precipitation will lead to a smaller beak size and larger population.…

The finches on Darwin and Wallace Islands feed on seeds produced by plants growing on these islands. There are three categories of seeds: soft seeds, produced by plants that do well under wet conditions; seeds that are intermediate in hardness, produced by plants that do best under moderate precipitation; and hard seeds, produced by plants that dominate in drought conditions. The lab is based on a model for the evolution of quantitative traits-characteristics of an individual that are controlled by large numbers of genes. These traits are studied by looking at the statistical distribution of the trait in populations and investigating how the distribution changes from one generation to the next. For the finches in Evolution Lab, the depth of the beak is the quantitative trait. I investigated how this trait changes under different biological and environmental conditions.…

The last section of the Introduction states the purpose of the research. The purpose can usually be summarized in a few sentences. Hypotheses are also included here at the end of this section. State your hypotheses as predictions (e.g., “I predicted that...”), and try to avoid using passive tense (e.g., “It was predicted that...”). You will notice that hypotheses are written in past tense because you are describing a study you have finished.…
