Congratulations to our Senior

After a campaign and vote among

Alexis Kritsky – Vice President
Aimee Powell – Secretary
Starr Hunter – Marketing Leader

Stay Warm and Healthy This Winter
This is the time of year for family, fun and togetherness! It is also the time for sore throats, coughs and sniffles. It is very important to take certain preventative measures to make sure that our bodies stay warm and therefore less susceptible to cold-causing germs.
Here are some quick cold-weather tips to keep you and your loved ones nice and toasty:
Keep your extremities warm – Wear thick socks and gloves to keep those digits from going numb.
Wear a hat – Have you ever seen steam coming off a person’s head outside during the winter months? If so, that’s because most of the body’s heat is released from our heads.
Heat rises…so unless you are doing handstands, then you should keep that noggin covered.
Wear layers – Multiple sweaters or thermals underneath a winter coat will help to keep most of the body temperature locked inside and will keep us comfortable.
Drink plenty of warm liquids – Hot green tea or cocoa are great for warming up after some fun in the cold sun.
Vitamin C is the way to be – Take a multivitamin, or simply drink a glass of orange juice to give your immune system a nice boost. Vitamin C is great at maintaining the body’s resistance to flu-causing germs.
Use moisturizer and lip balm- – Keep your hands, face and lips moisturized to avoid chapping and unwanted redness.
Stay warm and healthy so that you can tackle finishing up your courses on time!

We encourage all seniors to stay involved for all of the exciting

upcoming events of their senior year! FLVSFT High School ● 5401 S. Kirkman Road, Suite 550 ● Orlando, Fl. ● (877) 500 - FLVS

Principals Message
Welcome to November!
We have gotten off to a smooth start to the school year! I wanted to officially introduce myself as
Principal. In September, I took over as Principal. For the 2012-2013 school year, I was an Assistant
Principal for the FLVS Full-Time High School. Prior to joining the FLVS Full-Time High School, I was an
Instructional Leader and teacher for the FLVS part time program, joining FLVS in November 2006.
Prior to joining FLVS, I was a math teacher in Broward County for 5 years. I am excited for the school year ahead, and am here to support you in ensuring your child’s success in our program.
For our Public students we have completed the September EOC offering and FCAT Retakes. Next up,
December EOCs for our students who need to retake, or are currently completing Intensive Math or
2nd Semester of: Algebra, Geometry, Biology, US History.
The counseling team is busy working on senior reviews as we prepare for graduation. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your student’s guidance counselor or visit http:// www.thecounselorcorner.com/ for information.
We are officially kicking off our first ever National Honor Society induction for our Public program students. If you are in 10th – 12th grade, you received a webmail with due dates for applications.
Check out the message board for additional information. Our National Honor Society Sponsor, Alice
Kate Berry, is more than happy to answer any questions you may have. You can contact her at: aberry@flvs.net With the holidays around the corner, there are some vacation days for our school. November 25 –
November 29 for Thanksgiving, and December 23 – January 3 for Winter Break. At this point in the year, your student should be about 60% complete with their first semester courses. Students who

are behind, should utilize the holiday time off with no new work on their planner, to get back on track. Students who have 25 or more overdue lessons, or are failing 3+ courses, will be contacted by their HR teacher, to set up a success plan to assist in getting your student successfully through the semester. We look forward to the year ahead!!
Sincerely,
Katie Santana
Principal

Family Involvement and Federal Programs
Family Involvement is Key for Student Success
Florida Virtual School Full Time wants you to be an active participant in your child’s education. That is why we will be holding our Annual Title I Meeting and Student
Advisory Council Meetings to keep you aware and engaged in the activities and programs to help improve student achievement. Look for upcoming surveys to provide feedback on classroom instruction, events, and our staff.
Florida Virtual School Full Time receives federal educational funding to provide supplemental services for students, teachers, and parents. Three federal programs provide these supplemental services:
1. IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act)
2. Title I, Part A (Improving the Academic

Achievement of the Disadvantaged)
3. Title II, Part A (Improving Teacher
Quality)
Some of the services these federal educational programs provide are:
Additional teachers
Supplemental software programs
Extra professional development and training for teachers and principals
The Title I, Part A requires that our teachers be highly qualified, meaning that teachers are certified in the subject they teach. For
FLVS FT, this is a winwin because we only hire highly qualified teachers. As parents and guardians, you have the right to know the professional

qualifications of your child’s teacher.
Florida Virtual Full
Time 9-12 has developed a Parental
Involvement Plan to involve parents in the academic programs in an effort to increase student achievement. This plan was developed with parent input and support in
June 2013 and has been approved by FLVS
FT administration. Several parent meetings will occur throughout the year to check the status of the plan and to evaluate its effectiveness. We hope that you will join us in our efforts to ensure our students are successful by participating in these parent meetings. In order to keep you informed of the academic achievement of your child and the school as a whole, information will be made available to you via the Parental Portal. Getting Ready for College
By Tisha Green Rinker, Senior Manager of School Counseling

Myth of the month
"It doesn't matter which classes I take in high school, as long as my grade point average is high."

Go to http:// www.actstudent.org/ college/pdf/ comparison.pdf to fill out ACT's free college comparison worksheet.

Make plans to visit colleges this spring when classes are in session.

The truth:

Start or update an academic resume.

Hello parents! It is a exciting and busy time of year for students, parents and school staff! Here are some suggestions for the parents of our high school students to get your child ready for college.

If you're playing the GPA game and taking a light schedule that doesn't challenge you, it will catch up with you at college very quickly. One of the things admissions officers pay attention to, besides GPA, is  course selection throughout high school and especially senior year. They like to see students have momentum going into the freshman year. If you sit back your senior year, it's hard to recapture that momentum. The courses you take can also affect admissions test scores. If you just go for a good GPA, your test scores will be lower and you won't be well prepared for col-  lege. Have a Social Security number or get one as soon as possible. Students will need it for college applications.
Register for the ACT. Juniors should be academically ready to take the ACT by spring of this year.
If not, they should plan to take it in the summer or fall, work hard in school and check out http:// www.actstudent.org/sampletest/index.html for free test questions.
Check into applying to college online.
Investigate scholarship opportunities.

Jump-start your junior
It's time for juniors to spring into action. Ideally, juniors have already been thinking about college and investigating choices, but now is the time for action. As a parent, you know time goes by very quickly. Here are some reminders to keep them on track.
Juniors should:

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact your school counselor!
**All information was taken from http:// www.actstudent.org/index.html Check into applying to college online.

Investigate scholarship opportunities.
Continue to take challenging courses. That includes senior year. While it's tempting to sign up for easy courses, that will hurt chances for college If you have any questions or concerns feel free to conadmission and make it more difficult to handle tact your school counselor! college coursework.

Begin to make a preliminary list of colleges to investigate further. Surf the Internet and use resources in the counseling office or library.

    Chronometric Dating

Before there were any true scientific dating methods, scientists depended on their past archives of fossils and strata in order to determine how old a newly found fossil was. However, it wasn't until the mid 20th century that scientists could abandon this pathetic, inaccurate process and move into a more acceptable precise and detailed procedure. The old way was done by comparing one fossil to other fossils found in the same layer of the earth's ground and studying the physical characteristics of the fossil. Scientists took guesses and made assumptions of the age of a fossil and what time period in belonged to. With the discovery of chronometric dating, finally, a whole new world of answers and possibilities came into view and it opened doors…

Evolution discusses "modification throughout time". Regarding physical anthropology, evolution is transformations throughout time within organisms. I believe that the second amendment, the right to keep and bear arms, has been the most important in protecting citizens from possible governmental abuse because this amendment assures that citizens will always have a way of defending themselves against any risks or threats to their freedom. This amendment is a reminder to the government that they cannot and should not try to stop citizens from having the right to bear arms. I chose this right because I believe that without the second amendment the first amendment would not really make much sense because without the right to bear arms would mean citizens does not have the right to their freedom either. If the second amendment was taken away it would have such an enormous and negative impact on society. The crime rate would increase drastically because the criminals would know unquestionably that citizens are not able to defend their selves. The second amendment also gives citizens a similarity to have with the government, because officers are given the right to bear arms no matter what, and some cops use this amendment to their advantage so having protection should be the citizens right. This amendment has affected me personally because I have witnessed my aunt putting it into good use after she went through the proper training to obtain her legal license to bear arms. Someone broke into her house a while back without killing the robber she shot him in the left knee to assure that he would be caught by the cops. Her right to bear arms came into good use because if there was no such thing as a second amendment, she would have not been able to defend herself from the perpetrator who entered her home.…

Human technological and social developments have always fostered the rapid movement of people throughout the globe. The Paleolithic Era, 60,000 BCE 10 12,000 BCE, was no exception to mass migrations. Some may believe that those living during the “Stone Age” would not be able to move from continent to continent, however, it is quite possible that did. There are many reasons that can help support the idea that early humans moved around quite easily in their time. I believe explaining where, why, and how they moved will help most people understand how our ancestors moved around without airplanes or automobiles.…
