Chapter 5 Summary Questions

1.The reason why participation in the community is so essential to human dignity is because we are all interconnected in so many different ways, and we are dependent on another to provide protection of our dignity. As well, this allows individuals to live their life to the fullest, truly representing the dignity of man within his community.
2. Human beings are social, which means that we are designed by God to develop healthy, loving relationships with one another to create a community that shares and protects one another. There are two distinct ways to think about a community. Exclusion, being one of them, attempts to determine who does and does not belong to the community by focusing on the differences that separate people form one another. Inclusion, conversely, recognizes that those differences are small compared to the dignity people share in common as images of God.

4. In the incident of the menorah being attacked, everyone was affected. Everyone as in the community, since if one portion of the community is failing, then the rest of the community falls with it. In particular, it was Tammie and her son, who were targeted because of their beliefs. This ultimately had a permeating effect, and what seemed to be a destroyer of love and peace actually inadvertently revealed the benevolent qualities of those in the community. It strengthened the tie between individuals, and brought together a strong, loving group of people.
