A legend is a nonhistorical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition. Over time, a legend becomes commonly accepted as true. While legends usually elevate the main characters to heroic proportion, the best of them have a basis in fact. Often times, a legend changes over time in order to keep it fresh to new generations. Legends are told to teach and to inspire. They are told to entertain and pass down tradition. Perhaps no legend has reached a wider audience than that of King Arthur and his Round Table. A close examination of this subject helps to explain why this collection of stories about the exploits of a Dark Ages era king has become so well known and popular over the centuries. He was one of the main knights in the Arthur legend and was renowned for his courteousness. When he started on the quest, Gawaine was prepared to do anything. He was upset at his lack of progress when he found himself at an abbey. The monks there told him that Sir Galahad was there and had been on all sorts of adventures. Gawaine also met Sir Uwaine, and the three decided to continue the quest as a team. One day, they happened upon seven knights, and decided to entertain themselves by attacking. They killed the knights, but later were remorseful as this was against their code. In their guilt, the three decide to separate again. Sir Gawaine continued on his way and met Sir Ector. This is not the Sir Ector that raised Arthur, but rather was Sir Lancelot 's brother. One night the two stayed in a chapel, and each had a separate dreams. When they woke up, a hand appeared and told them to stop their quest because they would never find the Holy Grail. They disregarded this sign. Sir Gawaine later met a knight that challenged him to a joust. He accepted and the joust was on. Sir Gawaine killed the challenger, only to discover he had slain Sir Uwaine. Gawaine was dishonored because he had killed his knightly brother. Later Gawaine found a hermit that explained their dreams. He finally realized the quest was pointless, but it was too late to save his brother Uwaine. This story shows that just because someone is brave and committed does not mean their chosen path is
