My partner and I founded a non-profit organization called GuyCambo several years ago – our objective is to create educational opportunities for the economically disadvantaged children here locally in Stockton, and in our respective countries of Guyana and Cambodia as well. We’re targeting the bottom half of poverty. The Khmer Rouge decimated the education infrastructure and there was nothing left. As a matter of fact, there is still no place for the undeserved children in Cambodia. As a result and extreme poverty, only the very few can afford a good education opportunity. I am bridging the gap for theses under privilege children. I am doing this right now but I want to be able to do this full time, which is why I am getting my education.…
Around the world, 61 million children aren’t able to go to school. UNICEF is working in the world’s hardest to reach and poorest communities to ensure all children complete a basic school education. It does this with the support of the IKEA Foundation…
Throughout the past few years I have taken part in many projects and activities to foster education and global engagement. The most recent is my upcoming outreach trip to the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club. This trip was planned by myself, 3 other education students and our faculty supervisor. The purpose of this trip is to provide support for the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club (AZBGC). As Education students, we are taking this opportunity to provide daily lessons for the children who visit the Boys and Girls Club. We started the planning in September and we have put in over 120 hours since then in order to make this trip as beneficial for the children at the AZBGC. Apart of this planning, we have raised funds to help support the children's’ education costs. While planning for this outreach trip, I decided to partner with a local grade seven class to teach them about social justice. Their classroom teacher told me that with the recent media attention in the USA she is having difficulty teaching her students about justice and discrimination. We decided to partner together to teach both the Ugandan Children as well as the Canadian grade seven class about what it is like to live in a different part of the world. This partnership will entail writing letters to each other as well as creating a video about life in each of their respective locations.…
The question everyone's asking it should we have year round school? Well, I'm here to answer that question with a little help from Brigid Schulte on the Washington post. We should not have year round school because it can cut into family activities. Here is some thoughts from the Washington post. Still, when Mount Vernon Community School first considered the idea of going to a modified calendar a few years ago, it was a battle royale. Some middle-class parents argued that it was important for children to lie on their backs and watch the clouds for hours over a long summer break. This post is by Brigid Schulte and posted on 2009/06/05. This is why Michigan schools should not go to a year round calendar because it…
Select the best and worst presidencies from the time period we cover in the course (1400-1877). You are to write a persuasive essay providing at least three reasons for your conclusion about each of these two presidencies. You may use these guidelines as you write your essay.…
3.8 million children are currently living in poverty in the UK, one area in particular that is affected by this is education. By the time they start school, many poor children are already lagging behind, this can continue throughout their whole education.…
I have work diligently knowing that there are children around the world, girls especially, who do not have the ability to attend school. I was inspired most to give my all in my education when I was able to see those who have not had access to education first hand. I had the opportunity to take a trip to a remote mountain village in Haiti. While there I met a girl who was 15 years old, just as I was. Through communicating across the language barrier and with the use of fingers to represent numbers, I discovered that she was in the fifth grade. I was in tenth. From the moment one I have been able to better appreciate the value of education and how in having the opportunity to attend school, I should be taking advantage of this ability and doing my best work as to optimize the fortuity that I…
One’s introduction to high school is the foundation for higher level education and work until retirement. If the foundation is not set right, it can cause everything else to collapse. In an effort to regulate this and to help everyone succeed, schools throughout the nation are restructuring their education system by putting incoming freshmen in a separate setting from the rest of the community. While this seems like a good idea, it has some serious faults. In order to help the incoming high schoolers succeed, they need to get exposure to the setting…
Online, physically, or verbally you can be a victim of being bullied. You don’t have to keep things as they are. The question is how to handle the situation (Do you attack the bully and become the bully yourself? Or do you ignore the bully and pretend all is well?) What you do is speak up and ask for help. I would know, because not only was I a victim, I was also a person who stood by and simply watched it happen.…
According to a study conducted by EducationNext, “moving to middle school leads to a substantial drop in student test scores in the first year of the transition, and the relative achievement of middle-school students continues to decline in the subsequent years they spend in such schools.” One aspect of the educational system that I think can be vastly improved is middle school. Although middle schoolers are faced with numerous challenges, the middle school curriculum does not allow students to explore their interests and more importantly, doesn't challenge students enough. In middle school, there is not a lot of advanced coursework that students can complete. This is why I believe that middle school students should have the opportunity to take a more strenuous curriculum by allowing them to take high school classes, as this system will give students the curriculum that they need to succeed and it will give them an abundance of time to explore their interests.…
I was not the first and I will not be the last person to struggle with reading. It would be selfish of me to only help myself. I wanted to find a way to make reading more accessible to students who are in a similar predicament. I decided to join forces with the other African students at my school and we created an organization called Scholars in Our Society and Africa (SOSA). SOSA aims to collect school supplies – textbooks, books, notebooks, pencils, etc. – to donate to deprived communities in Ghana. We worked with a nonprofit organization called “Called To Serve” to help us with the shipping and we successfully sent our first shipment to a high school not far from my hometown Techiman. Currently, we are working with seven different high schools in the Bronx to send up to 5000 used…
For Bellmont High School our band always does concessions for football, basketball and wrestling season. In order for us who are in band to get our patches for our letterman jacket we must do eight concessions. Although, if we don't have eight concessions for each year done by the time we graduate the students, who don't have them don, can't graduate without paying a $100 fine. Well sometimes there are difficulties to get all eight in. I think that the people who don't have their eight in shouldn't have to pay that fine.…
As Nelson Mandela said once “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”My goal is to ensure and provide quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for as many kids as i can. In sub-Saharan Africa, the literacy rate is 59%, 41% of the kids and adults can’t read a book on a day to day basis like we can in America.. Africa has one of the worst literacy rates in the world. Africa is also one of the most poorest country in the world. Not only does educating young children benefit them with more knowledge, but it also helps the countries. More educated people can lead to great economical growth and development.…
Have you ever wondered if football is a more dangerous sport than soccer? Football is a contact sport. You can get tackled in football but you can’t get tackled in soccer. You’re more prone to get injured in football than you are in soccer. A higher number of injuries result in contact sports. To help prevent injuries, both sports have rules that enforce the use of safety equipment…
Gangs used to be about just wearing the wrong colors or being on the wrong street. Now gang life is about drugs, weapons, payback, and recruiting new members. Children are being killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mothers are losing their children because of gang violence. Crime is constantly rising because of the street gangs. Also, the property value is going down because of the areas with more gang violence.…
