Journey In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown
“Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne is set in Salem, Massachusetts, within the 1850’s. Young Goodman Brown, the main character, must embark on a journey into the forest, just like his father and grandfathers before him. He is recently married to his wife, Faith, for only three months, but within the journey that he will soon encounter, he must save her life. Once the journey ends, Young Goodman Brown must determine where his heart lies with God. Young Goodman Brown must determine his loyalty, whether it be to his ancestors, the love of his life, or to his religion. The journey that Young Goodman Brown takes into the forest will soon determine his fate of how he lives his life. Young Goodman Brown’s ancestors walked with a man into the forest when they first got married. Which made Young Goodman Brown inclined to do the same. Within the forest, when he first met his guide, he thought he was seeing himself, which startled him.
