Joseph Mccarthyism And The Crucible
Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York City, New York on October, 17 1915. Most surprisingly, Arthur Miller was once married to Marilyn Monroe. Miller is the author of many notable works, including the Death of a Salesman and All My Sons. Many of his plays received various awards and accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Praemium Imperiale. He was questioned by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Un-American Activities during the red scare. Miller was soon found guilty of contempt of Congress. As a response, Miller wrote The Crucible as an allegory to McCarthyism, where you make accusations without any evidence based on the former american senator, Joseph McCarthy. In the 1600's, we had the Salem witch trials, and as described in the book, "The Crucible", a group of girls falsely accuse their neighbors of witchcraft, and regular, innocent people are hung. Then, in the 1950's, a man named Joseph McCarthy sparked a craze of accusing people, mainly government officials, of being communist, thus scarring their careers. The McCarthy hearing are similar to the Salem witch hunt because the accuser exaggerates and fabricates evidence, the accused are used as scapegoats for society's problems, and McCarthy and the Salem girls use the accusations to obtain power.…

    Author Miller was an American playwright, essayist and prominent figure in twentieth-century American theatre. Born on October 17, 1915, in Harlem, New York City, he was the second of three children of Polish Jewish immigrants. At the University of Michigan, Miller first majored in journalism and worked as a reporter and night editor for the student paper, the Michigan Daily. It was during this time that he wrote his first play, “No Villain” which won the Avery Hopwood Award. Miller enrolled in a playwriting seminar taught by the influential Professor Kenneth Rowe, who instructed him in his early forays into playwriting. Miller established the Arthur Miller Award in 1985 and Arthur Miller Award for Dramatic Writing in 1999, and lending his name to the Arthur Miller Theatre in 2000. In 1938, Miller received a BA in English. In 1940, he married Mary Grace Slattery and together they had two children. In 1946, Miller's play “All My Son’s” was a success on Broadway (earning him his first Tony Award, for Best Author) and his reputation as a playwright was established. In 1948 he wrote “Death of a Salesman”, which premiered on Broadway. The play was commercially successful and critically acclaimed, winning a Tony Award for Best Author, the New York Drama Circle Critics' Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Miller traveled to Salem, Massachusetts to research the witch trials of 1692. The Crucible opened at the Beck Theatre which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1962. In June 1956, Miller left his first wife Mary Slattery and on June 29 and later married Marilyn Monroe. Miller began work on “The Misfits”, starring his wife; shortly before the film's premiere in 1961, the pair divorced. Miller married photographer Inge Morath on February 17, 1962 and they went on to have two children together. In 1965, Miller was elected the first American president of PEN International. In our current packet, which included information about “the Salem Witch Trials,” there were three women who were accused and trialed as being a witch.
