IN john updikes short story "A&P" , sammy quitting his job is an act of rebellion. Sammy quits his job after Mr. Lengel tells the girls that iit is store policy not to wear something so revealing. Since the short Story was written in 1961, a time where social view was being clased, and changed. In this story, Sammy rebels against the conservative group, which is represented by Mr. Lengel the manager. The way the girls dressed in bathing suits, was too risque for Mr. Lengel. As he tells the girls " We want you decently dressed when you come here. " the girl s respond with" we are decent".This story, shows the form of rebelllion of the youth at that time. As sammy quits he calls everybody in the store" sheep" since they all follow a set of rules

    John Updike's short story "A & P" shows you that there is a very thin line between being a hero and being stupid. I do admire the courage of the morally ambitious teenager who decides to standup and defend the young women’s honor in true fairy tale fashion. However, I can also see a sense of stupidity that occurs when you take a young adolescent teenager making off-the-hip decisions in order to impress the opposite sex. The decisions are hardly ever logic driven but for some strange reason they seem to always make sense at the time. For example, in Sammie’s mind he was making the right decision and as he walks out of the store thinking he is going to collect his reward for standing up for the girls he realizes that his efforts went unnoticed as he says “I look around for my girls, but they're gone, of course.     Throughout history, there have been those who lead, and those who follow. Up until the 1960's, oppression and conformity were strong characteristics of the U.S., especially for women. There is only so much a person can be controlled however before they begin taking steps to break free from the powerful grip of what society dubs as right, and appropriate. In John Updike's short story "A&P," Sammy, the main character, along with three daring and audacious women make bold, and somewhat rash choices in order to combat what was deemed as acceptable in society's eyes. Such can be seen when the three young women make the bold decision to enter a public establishment in only bathing suits during a time where girls had to be prim, proper and appropriate at all times. And by Sammy making the impulsive and brave decision to quit his miserable job in order to stand up for what he believes in, he is liberated from an occupational position that weighed him down mentally and emotionally.     John Updike’s “A&P” short story was written approximately in 1961, the beginning of the sixties. As many know the sixties were a strange social time in the United States in which society completely radicalized and turned against the traditional and conservative moral standards. The battle for conformity began to be lost completely to individualism in the sixties which is what the short story conveys. Throughout the short story there are various examples of conformity being pitted against individualism simply because of the time period in which the story was born. The youth in the sixties no longer decided to follow a social norm rather than become individualized which is exactly what occurs in this story; displaying a greater view on American culture during that era. In the early 1960’s a counterculture erupted which was led by the standards of individualism, this counterculture had as one of its principles simplistic nature. This idea of simplistic nature is displayed throughout the story; for instance when the three girls walking into the store with basic simple clothes on, it led to an idea and sense of individualism triumphing over conformism but as well as rebellion over conformity.
