John Updike's a&P : Sammy's Growth
John Updike's A&P : Sammy's Growth

John Updike's story A&P is about a nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who has a job at the local grocery store, the A&P. Sammy works at the register in the store and is always observing the people who walk in and out each day. On this particular day that the story takes place, Sammy is caught off guard when a cluster of girls walk into the store wearing just their bathing suits. This caught Sammy's attention because the nearest beach is five miles away and he could not figure out why they would still be in their suits. Sammy continues to overlook the girls in the store throughout their endeavor to pick up some item's that they were sent in for. While they are wandering around the store Sammy watches the reactions of other customers, is yelled at for ringing up a woman's item twice, and watches the whereabouts and gestures of the girls until checkout. Once the girls proceed to checkout they are approached by the manager of the store for being improperly dressed in public. Sammy felt that the encounter with the manager was unnecessary and discomforting to the girls and he decides it is time to quit his job. Sammy's decision to quit his job at the grocery store shows his development from an immature teenager to a person who will take a position for what he believes in no matter the consequences. Sammy's immaturity is seen right from beginning of the story when he says, " In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits"( Updike 596). At first Sammy could not watch them stroll around the store because his back was at the door, but once they were in his sight he instantaneously begins to illustrate them and notice every physical detail of each of the girls, from their skin tone to the color of the suits. He and his other friends that work in the store gawk with their jaws dropped at the girls. Sammy's description of one of the girls is as follows " The one that caught my eye first was the one in the placid green two-piece. She

The readers are to view Sammy as a typical teenager: indifferent to those around him (except to queenie) and yet, markedly self-conscious. He proves to be an observant narrator, allowing the reader farther inspection into our protagonist. We see Sammy drink in the details of the three girls; he pays close attention to the textures of their suits, their facial features, and tan lines. However, Sammy goes beyond what he physically observes and attempts to glean what their lives are like outside of A&P. What he sees, is attractive and his appetite for association has a distinct influence over his future decisions. This is drives his observations to become detrimentally tunnelled. As Sammy dismisses A&P customers and co-workers and quits, he is…

In Updikes’ short story named “A & P” we are given the point of view of Sammy, a nineteen-year-old cashier, that offers us a very unique twist to what transpired in this grocery store. This perspective gives the reader the ability; to directly listen to Sammy as he describes the event, and also be able to provide his own opinion. Had the story been narrated in a different manner, many of the things the readers would come to learn about Sammy, would be completely abolished. Thus the story would of been entirely different and confusing to the reader. Only because they would have no way of understanding Sammy and his actions.…

In John Updikes’ short story, A&P Sammy's character as described by the narrator, comes off as immature. The way Sammy is very observant and judgmental towards the three girls reveals something much deeper. It seems as if Sammy is very unhappy at his dead end job, he feels stuck. The narrator makes it seem as if Sammy wants something more from life. He obviously doesn't care about his job. He quits to impress the girls, only to be left alone in the end. I think Sammy is trying to prove something to the girls and everyone else around him. It seems he sort of envy’s the girl’s lives, especially ‘Queenie.’ When he stands up for the girls he is searching for some sort of satisfaction, to be held at the same level of the girls. When he stands…

First of all, in the beginning of the story, Sammy mainly describes the three girls wearing swimsuits caught everyone's attention in A&P. “In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits… The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece…” (1-5). The three girls catch Sammy and every other person’s eyes. They are shocked by what the girls are wearing, because barely anyone has done such a thing before. This shows us that the people in this town always follow the rules. Also, there is another important character in the story. According to Sammy, the old register…

In his description of the three girls. Sammy “seems immature for his age and rather ‘girl crazy.’ His descriptions of the young women are...quite adolescent” (Moscowitz 37). Even from the beginning, Sammy describes them in extreme, lewd detail. “She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it...at the top of the back of her legs” (Updike 19). It was the lust that he shows us which caused him to commit the fateful deed of quitting his…

Sammy, with his narration, proved to be sarcastic and opinionated, and someone who observes everything and everyone around him, which in his mind gives him power over everyone else. For instance, while he was absorbing every single detail about the girls’ physical appearance, he reflects that one never really knows how a girl’s mind works, and further goes to ask himself if it is “...a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glassjar?” Sammy believes he is superior to the girls because of the power of his observations and thinks he knows the type of people they are just by looking at them. Sammy proves the latter when he expresses the second girl is “... the kind of girl other girls think is very ‘striking’ and ‘attractive’ but…

Sammy says “and then the third one, that wasn’t quite so tall. She was the queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making their shoulders round. She didn’t look around not this queen she just walked straight on slowly on these long white prima Dona legs” (201) Sammy was attracted to all three of the girls but the one that he liked the most was queenie. He had a lot of details to describe the way queenie looked and what she was doing. Sammy says “You know, it’s one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on a beach where what with the glare nobody can look at each other much anyway and another thing in the cool of the A&P, Under the florescent lights, against all those stacked packages with her feet paddling along naked over our checker- bored green and cream rubber tile floor.” (202). Although Sammy had never met Sammy it seemed like he was falling in love with her. He says that if he would have seen her at the beach he would have never been so interested it her but since he first saw her in A&P he is able to see the true beauty in her because of how bright the lights were in the…
