You hit the jackpot. Enough to provide for you and your family beyond your wildest dreams. Imagine the riches it would bring, but also the darkness of human nature. Kino lives contently in a small village with his wife Juana and son Coyotito. It’s a simple but happy life. That is until he finds “the pearl of the world”. Although it seems that all of their problems will be gone, in reality it gives way to evil and desire. John Steinbeck creates a remarkable novella following the story of Kino and his family as they are impacted by greed. In the story of The Pearl, characteristics of Aristotle’s System of Tragedy are evident through Kino’s demonstration of hamartia, catastrophe, and catharsis.…
Grief, shock, and sorrow describe how I feel at the end of the famous novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (1937). This favorable book is about two farmers named George and Lennie who dream of owning a house on a farm, and live a better life, until an accident occurs. George has to do something so terrible that it's hard to handle. Characterization, setting, and figurative language mark out why George did the right thing.…

Steinbeck represents the character, Crooks, by showing the effects of discrimination. He is referred to as the ‘black’ stable buck and is named Crooks, due to the crook in his back, which was a result of being kicked in the back by a horse. The character is shown as reasonably literate, due to the possession of his books, which he uses as compensation to his loneliness. The reader would have a lot of sympathy for Crooks, as he is treated unfairly and acts very lonely, showing he doesn’t have anyone to comfort him and to talk about his problems to.…
“Don’t blame me when he gauges your eyes out” said Jem when introducing the Radley house to Dill. This shows how the town is scared of the Radley family although they don’t know much about them. This is important because without the Radley mystery half of the book wouldn’t have been written. It also shows many different types of rhetorical devices and figurative language.…

Within the Pearl John Steinbeck uses quite a few techniques to show the cause and effect of such misfortune and imperfection. John Steinbeck evokes themes of the destructive power of greed, wealth, racism, and the loss of innocence and contentment within the Pearl by showing it through the dialogues and characterisations of individuals, for example the Doctor, by looking at the dialogues and characterisation of the Doctor, readers can easily figure out that he is…
In the novel, Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, he emphasizes symbols, demonstrating that people build friendships and relationships to work toward hope and their dreams. To begin with, George and Lennie have each other to emphasize their dream of the farm. Lennie always asked George about the farm to visualize it again and again. “..Now tell how it is with us… with us, we got a future...An’ live off the fatta the lan’...tell about what we’re gonna have in the garden and about the rabbits..” (Steinbeck 14) The farm becomes a symbol for their relationship, and the retelling of the dream has become a ritual. This is the place where George and Lennie will have self-respect and independence. Furthermore, George and Lennie befriend Candy…
A man getting shot and killed by their Best friend might sound mean and horrible but a guy in Steinback will make you think things around and puzzle stuff together to make you feel even worse making you feel you did the right thing or the bad thing. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing in characterization to make the reader realize that George did the right thing.…
“The best laid schemes of mice and men go often askew”, said Robert Burns, in the poem “To a Mouse”. In this book Steinbeck uses foreshadowing a lot for upcoming events that will shock you. This book is about 2 friends that have a huge farm dream and a lot of things happen in this story to make that big plan go askew. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to indicate the deaths of the farm dream, Curley’s wife dying, and Lennie.…

There is no meaning to life. Life has no inherent meaning. The meanings of our lives are chosen by what we feel and experience or are assigned to us by others. The ends of our existence cannot be foreseen and will not be limited by such things as destiny. These are the ideas and philosophies of those who believe life to be non-teleological. A famous literary example of a non-teleologist is a man named John Steinbeck. Throughout his life Steinbeck experimented with Darwinism, transcendentalism, realism, socialism, naturalism, and Taoism (Endnotes 1). Each of these ways of thinking show up in Steinbeck's philosophy and therefore his work cannot be classified specifically. All that may be said is that he had a non-teleological way of thinking. As nature played such a major role in his life, Steinbeck's characters are shaped by nature and their surroundings give purpose to their lives. These characters' fates are not pre-determined. Instead every event in the natural world gives new meaning to a life. As a result of Steinbeck's non-teleological beliefs, his characters' lives contain no inherent meaning and their ever-changing paths are influenced by occurrences and over the passage of time.…
Steinbeck skillfully use the Pearl as a symbol to illustrate the emotions of despair. First, kino sees a great hole on the bottom of his canoe, making Kino have sorrow in Kino’ range.Next, when Kino get to his boat, he saw,” a great hole on the bottom of the canoe”(Steinbeck 32). The Pearl symbolizes despair since the canoe was past down from father to son, now it broken. This made the reader sad because Kino won’t have the canoe to pass on to Coyotito. This happen in the world because the father wanted to pass things to their son but might be destroyed or…
The title of the poem, Pearl, indicates something of high value – whether it be spiritual, economical or personal – to the audience. The pearl is indeed valuable to the father as he lives in misery as he mourns the death of his daughter however the poem discusses many aspects of worthiness and value when describing a person’s physique, piety, and behavior. During the dream dialogues between father and daughter arguments erupt about heavenly rewards based on earthly conduct and beliefs which lead to discussions of sin and repentance. The poem intertwines discussions of earthly value and heavenly worthiness in its content and structure to ultimately show that heavenly worthiness should be the ultimate goal of humans as earthly value last only in life while the beauties of heaven are ever lasting and more impressive.…
