Jilt Whitman Analysis
Here in Whitman Mission, it is nothing like I expected. Everyone was expecting a nice place to rest and to stock up on supplies, but it was not like that at all. It is a very deserted area, with many burned down buildings. We soon found out from one wagon with family of four that one month before we got here, the Cayuse Indians attacked this place, killing many people and burning down buildings. We decided that instead of going to Fort Vancouver, we will just continue on the trail with the problem of running short on supplies. We reach the Dalles before getting the Oregon City. Here we have to Barlow Road around Mt. Hood. We have barely any food left, every animal is near done, and people in our wagon train are starting to get sick. We are also low on money, but we have to pay a toll to go on the Barlow Road. We do not have enough money to pay for this because we need at least a little bit of money to start, so we have to get them to compromise, maybe pay $1.50 and give them one of our nice pans and something that Larry bought from the blacksmith shop. It took some convincing, but they gave in and we got through. Barlow Road is really rough and bumpy. It is knocking our things around and hurting our feet. Our feet are badly, badly blistered. It is so narrow that our wagon barely fits. We cannot walk next to our wagon, we have to either walk …show more content…
We finally arrive in Oregon City. We have walked 2,000 miles to get here. This six month journey was too much. Lucy is beginning to get sick, and we have to find a way to cure it before anything bad happens to her. We would like to start this new life as a happy family. I am beyond excited to finally be here. It looks like life will be better here, just really hope so. Everyone is relieved to finally be here, but we have to figure out how we are going to start. We will have to find land available for us and build a home. I cannot wait to get unpacked and settled

In the poem “When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer”, by Walt Whitman, the speaker “[becomes] tired and sick” of the learned astronomer's “proofs, [and] figures” used to observe the stars. While the others attending the lecture applaud the astronomer for his approach to the stars, the speaker, however, exits the lecture hall to enjoy the stars in his preferred method of going outside in the “perfect silence”. These contrasting scenes expose the dichotomous relationship of the speaker’s and the astronomer's approach to observing the stars. The use of structure, diction, and imagery reveal how the astronomer’s approach of observing the stars is far too mechanical and structured to truly see their beauty.…

When we reached the Blue Mountains, we were all faced with a big problem, the whole trail was covered in fallen trees and big bushes. And that wasn't the only problem, they were also pretty steep. For four days we spent cutting the bushes down, and moving all the fallen trees. On the fifth day we were finally able to travel up the hills, everyone made it up. The only thing that we had to watch was just to go slow and not to stop, and also to stay on the train because if you got off, you could fall down the wagon. We went one at a time and after a while everyone got up the steep hills. When we got to Whitman Mission, we felt pretty good, but really tired of traveling by wagon, and walking. We were looking forward to just getting to Oregon.…

In the movie, Lone Survivor, there are a lot of similar things that also happened during the tragic real life mission. For example, the author of the book and main character, Marcus Luttrell, was saved by Afghan villagers that helped him and protected him from the Taliban till he was able to be rescued by the US. According to Schneiderman, “That’s when a few Afghan villagers appeared before him. ‘No Taliban!’ one of them shouted. ‘No Taliban!’ He gave Luttrell water and helped carry him back to their…

It’s been a long time since I have been able to write because of the overwhelming chores, the rain, and of course the sickness we have all finally overcome. We are camped in front of Chimney Rock. We will stay here for only 3 days and then we are off on our trail. My husband says we shouldn’t stay any longer to keep distance from the violent Indians that want to run us out of our trail to prosper. There have been many fights between them and American’s but, we have been lucky to have escaped any harm. (Schultz, 2012)…

Walt Whitman and Donald Hall--These names incite a sense of excitement in almost every individual who enjoys poetry. The two American poets hail from different time periods, different backgrounds, and different lifestyles that have led to different experiences. However, despite their differences, the two poets appear to be very similar upon analyzing their works. “A Song of Myself” by Whitman and “My Son My Executioner” by Hall are poems that portray their fascination with the same theme – the cyclical nature of life. Another similarity that exists between the two poets is they both portray their views through utilizing examples from nature. In “A Song of Myself,” Whitman uses grass to highlight the cyclical nature of life,…

3 paragraph summary: The week before Christmas 2009 lead to be my most harrowing experience. Right after getting baptized in a mega church was what I thought to be the last week before the end. The end of walking to coffee houses 6 days a week to make yearbooks for athletes, fights with my parents and all around boredom. I was given the opportunity to fly out of the Bay Area to see my online girlfriend I’d been dating for a year to touch-down in the steaming desert that would end up taking everything from me, this place is called: Tucson, AZ.…

To travel down the Oregon Trail, we travelled in horse drawn wagons and had oxen’s pulling carts of supplies. I like other pioneer families left my home with my worldly possessions that I could afford to carry. We faced being robbed at gunpoint by highway men on the trail. There were many problems faced by migrants travelling west to Oregon and California which we know of, and these problems were more or less life-threatening. Most people ask why these migrants bothered to travel knowing the risks and more than likely consequences. Most Migrant’s and settler’s decisions were effected by push and pull factors, some which give no other option to these people but to move. The risks of their journeys consisted of predictable things such as bad weather however they also consisted of badly surprising things such as hostile Indian attacks.…

In Walt Whitman’s poem, Song of Myself, I found different key pieces of Whitman’s diction and language to be more in depth and not so cut, black and white. This poem really makes you think by giving you different perspectives of life to wonder about through the use of his words. I have gotten the impression that Whitman really values himself and his beliefs of a good world and being alive in the present is worthwhile to him. His words are very powerful, thoughtful and even strong enough to change somebodies view of how they see the world. Whitman includes inspirational, yet erotic views of how he feels for his soul and the life around him.…

How has it been at home so far Patrick? I know my family is happy that we were able to escape from the famine. I hope that the potatoes start to grow because I would love to hear good news from you very soon. Though Patrick if you and your family do decide to move you should beware that my trip wasn't that easy like I explained before of the the sickness but that’s not the only thing that may haunt your trip. The countless hours of sitting and looking at the dirty floors can haunt your mind and may lead to going insane. But I was so happy when we finally arrived it was the greatest sight I have ever seen! There were so many people I couldn’t believe my eyes how much immigrants like me were out there. When I arrived I was questioned on my family and my beliefs. Thankfully the official let me through to the next point in which I got checked on by a doctor. As you know my Irish blood runs through me I guess because I seem never to get sick so I finally joined my family in the streets of New York where my dreams were being made.…

When I got out of the terminal in LAX, I saw the smile on my mother’s face that was the happiest smile I hadn’t seen in a long time.
