Rabbi Abraham Isaac Hacohen Kook, also known as Rav Kook, has made contributions to the development and expression of the Jewish religion that were of absolute importance. He was born on September 8, 1865, in Griva, Latvia and died on September 1, 1935 in Jerusalem. In his time, he was the first Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi, founder of Religious Zionism and a renowned Torah scholar. Rav Kook was responsible for the term “Religious Zionism”, a divine scheme that established the state of Israel on strict Halakick grounds. He has envisaged Eretz Israel, the land promised to God’s people, as the “foundation upon which rests the throne of God in this world.” He saw it as a model state, existing on ethically pure conduct and policies, to serve as a “light for all nations.” He also developed the philosophies which formed the basis of Modern Orthodox Judaism. This enables Orthodox Jews to live a religious life in the secular world through the integration of traditional observance and values with tose of the secular world. This was done in 1924, when he set up the Mercaz Harev Kook Yeshiva in Jerusalem as a vessel for the implementation and promotion of both Religious Zionism and Modern Orthodoxy; it was also to train future rabbis. His writings were largely unpublished before his death, but they have since been distributed and studied. His contributions were so profound thus making him known as one of the most influential rabbis of the 20th century.…

While reading the article, “The Myth of the Culture of Poverty,” written by Paul Gorski, I tried to relate it back to Adelaide High School. Although I have only visited the school once, the article gave me ideas of what to look for in a school where poverty is sadly not uncommon. I believe the myth of the culture of poverty is very true. There are many people, who do believe that children, who are raised in ghettos where violence, gangs, and drug abuse is common, shouldn’t be given a nice school, highly qualified teachers, and a chance to get a good education. The job issues won’t will always be there unless the government does something about the problem and with that poverty takes a big part on it also, if there was an educational system allowing all people from all sorts of backgrounds gaining their skilled qualifications to a masters in science, but the class system like Karl Marx explains about the rich get richer and the poor will always be poor. Political, economic and historical events created a lot of inequalities in society towards different races and classes of people, but the Jewish people faced a lot of discrimination. One of the main reasons Herzl wanted to create this Jewish state was because of the constant violence and attacks Jewish people were facing from mainstream European groups. Herzl describes how Jews constantly faced “attacks in parliaments, in assemblies, in the press, in the pulpit, in the street”, and explains how often many Jews “are put to death”. Prior to this activity, I was skeptical that I would not learn anything beneficial or enlightening. After a little debate, I decided to move forward in watching the documentary Poor America. Although this was a short documentary, I felt that every second was impactful. This documentary was the perfect introduction to allow myself to develop within this series of multicultural activities. I felt engaged during the documentary because it showed several different people going through something similar that I have thankfully not had to experience in my life. A foundational part of being Jewish is to struggle. Throughout history, the Jewish people have struggled both physically - with the hardships that they had to face – and intellectually - with what is called a cognitive dissonance. In fact, one of the earliest struggles can be traced back to the prophet Jacob, who had to struggle with God himself. A Catholic child typically around twelve or thirteen years old goes through their confirmation. This is a ceremony where the young adult promises to follow with the religion and continue to learn about the faith. Jews Without Money is based on its author’s own childhood, Michael Gold. It re-creates the Jewish immigrant Lower East Side in Manhattan in which he lived, and it provides insight into the life of first- and second-generation Jewish Americans around the turn of the twentieth century. Gold does a wonderful job at putting the reader right in the middle of the sights, smells and sounds of people who may be materially poor, but very rich emotionally. The book paints for the most part a bleak picture of Jewish immigrant life in America, a picture that will remain bleak, the book’s ending implies, until the workers’ revolution occurs. Authors Lars Eighner and Barbara Ehrenreich discuss in their struggles of everyday issues with poverty in America. Barbara Ehrenreich, author of “Nickel-and-Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, raises awareness of the lives of low-wage, poverty stricken people being pushed into the labor market of welfare reform by highlighting the struggles they encounter daily. Whereas Lars Eighner, author of “On Dumpster Diving”, discusses being homeless and explaining the strategies and guidelines of surviving from dumpsters while explaining the etiquette involved in the process. While life seems to become easier theoretically, in theory, when you analyse life today, we have such advanced modes of transport, such easy ways of communication, in theory life seems easier than previous times, but practically life has become more challenging than the previous times. Tension, depression and frustration has become the order of the day. Happiness, joy and prosperity is something of the past. The very fears that haunt the minds of every individual that are ever lurking, “i must never be poor” “i must never be diagnosed with cancer” this must never happen, these fears are ever lurking in the heart and in the mind of every man is sufficient depression in the life of every person. The only way to avert financial depression is to convince yourself that Allah is the sustainer. The fluctuation in the currency and fake predictions of the economists, the competitors in the market will not make a difference to you. This is the modern day poverty. In the midst of comfort and luxury there is no joy. Prophet Muhammad saw said in the narration of ibn hibaan “know abu zar, wealth in essence is the contentment of the heart” nothing in this world can give you that contentment that is divine from Allah.
