Jenny Saville And Pablo Picasso Analysis
Both Jenny Saville and Pablo Picasso have produced significant pieces of work, showing their view and portrayal of women. Jenny Saville is a contemporary British artist born in 1970, whereas Picasso is the co-founder of the cubist movement, producing abstract work. Despite these movements differences, both artists have produced work on a similar ground, using women as their subject. Saville's most recent exhibition was in 2012 at the Modern Art Oxford Norton Museum of Art, in Florida. I recently saw Picassos work at the Tate Modern where his work is currently on display, I was particularly interested in the piece "Nude Woman with Necklace".

In the gallery, it was displayed on a white wall, in a 1181 x 1663 x 62 mm frame. The initial bright colours of the painting caused it to stand out, and the abstract shapes made it obvious that Picasso was the artist. The painting is rather vulgar, as the woman is laying in a reclined position, where all of her assets are on display. In most of Picasso's work, he tries to represent and show off beauty within his artwork, where as this image crosses beauty with what may also be seen as violence. Within the oil painting, there is a lot of reds and blues. The red may represent passion, domination and danger, with the blue representing coldness, sorrow, insecurity or innocence. As it is abstract, it means that everyone will interpret the artwork differently, as everyone will see different meanings as the answer isn't just black and white or explained to …show more content…
Picasso's painting, is not a self portrait, but instead a painting of his second wife in an abstract and nonrepresentational way, it has a similar theme of body distortion to Saville's work. As the paintings are of naked women being represented in a vigorous and sexualised way, it can cause an uncomfortable feeling when viewing it, but I think that this feeling is intended. Picasso was in his late eighties when he produced "Nude Woman With Necklace" and in his later years it was where he found his new style of painting, they show freedom and eccentrics, his paintings showed that even with his old age his talent and abilities have not lacked in

Some objects in the painting are a pregnant woman, a burning candle, a skull, and a cross lying on the table under some books. The way the woman’s head is rested on her hand and she is staring into the candle light, shows that she is in deep thought. I believe that the woman is reflecting upon her life. She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

When looking at Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before a Mirror”, one can obviously make out a girl observing herself in front of a mirror. The woman is portrayed one way before the mirror and another way in her reflection. Picasso is obviously sending a message behind the meaning of his work. He also, more than likely, has a reason and story behind why he rendered the work of art. This message and story become useless when it is reproduced onto a computer screen, according to John Berger. In his Ways of Seeing, Berger explains how technology accompanied by today’s world has somewhat tainted the worth and overall beauty of experiencing art. One no longer has the ability to remove him or herself from reality or as Clive Bell would say, have an “aesthetic…

The self-portrait painting is a baroque painting by Judith Leyster during the baroque period. In Bernini and Caravaggio paintings we saw high energy and dramatic art. Judith Leyster is a northern dutch baroque painter. Instead of the subject being religious she simply made the painting about the artist, herself. In the painting, she is turned to us in an awkward position as if she is trying to talk to us for a spontaneous moment.…

I definitely agree with you on how two artists convey the emptiness in their art work. I feel like emptiness in Dali's painting is more emphasized by the unfilled spaces, while Orozco uses skeleton as the figures representing privileged and empowered part of society. I found both of those devices very powerful, and they both had a striking impact on me.…

The human form has long been one of the great focal points of the art world. Artists from nearly every art period have at one time or another attempted to perfect the manner in which they showcased a human body more specifically the female nude form. The beauty of art is the manner through which the same event or scene can be displayed in a million different perspectives. The same can be said for the ways in which the female body has long been demonstrated. Artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso each used varying methods and styles to bring to life the human body, from Matisse's Luxe,Calme et Volupte to Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon the female form as a subject has been known to represent many things.…

The study of this painting can be communicated by a human face, it has the features of a specific person, Dora Maar, whom Picasso described as 'always weeping'. Your eyes wander over the sharp surface and you are led by the jagged black lines to the pictures centre, her mouth and chin, where the flesh seems to have been peeled away by corrosive tears to reveal hard white bone. The handkerchief she stuffs in her mouth is like a shard of glass. Her eyes are black apertures that when you are inside this picture you are inside pain; it hits you like a punch in the stomach and Picasso does an extremely good job at conveying the meaning behind the image. The bright yellow background contrasts with the white grey in the centre to show how the woman feels. The bright yellow makes the rest of the main focus on the image stand out strongly which is the shapes and Picasso did a great job in doing…

His first love which lasted 7 years was with Fernande Oliver (1881- 1966). She was credited for inspiring Picasso’s transition to the Rose Period. Later in his life, Picasso admitted that the figure from Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) was based on Oliver. She was also the model for his radical Head of Woman (1909), which is widely…

The way her eyes looked down made me feel as if she is ashamed of herself, not wanting to face the world around her. To me the slightest bit of orange above her left eye, the eye that is shedding a tear, makes me think that she was struck by an object or a closed fist. Her bare rough feet symbolize the roughness of life, and the struggles that she might have faced. Yet with all of the distress, I still get a sense of gracefulness. The way she keeps a straight back, only bringing her shoulders slight forward makes me think that through it all she still has a bit of hope remaining in her. While examining the woman more, I began to think about how she was place within the painting. I think the artist put the woman in the corner for a clear purpose. That purpose being that it is her comfort zone. Because corners are not a place where many people initially go, it can be a comfort zone for some, a place to be…

I see the happiness of living a beautiful and fulfilled life. The lines give the painting a three-dimensional look. The objects appear to be jumping out at us, the women in the purple coat being a prime example. Then there’s the shapes and patterns that puts her closer against the wall or corner, rather than in the middle. By combining the elements of her longue area you can clearly see the walls behind her, this is because of Emphasis.…

Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’ Avignon,” an expressionist piece of the early 20th century consists of multiple influences by African, Iberian and European artwork. Picasso uses jagged yet strict lines and fractured shapes with contrasting cool and warm colors to change an original take on form and space to something new. Picasso’s showcase of three dimensional design that lies flat on a two dimensional canvas creates a newfound mix of abstract design and representation of the five women shown in differing positions, 2 of which were inspired by calm Iberian sculptures while the remaining 3 energetic women were inspired by lively African sculpture. The women are within and surrounded by frosty blue drapes that are vivid next to their nude colored bodies. One of the five women is seated. This creates a new level and sense of movement to the painting. The figures of the women create an array of viewpoints consisting of frontal, right, and a three quarter back view.…

The painting by Pablo Picasso “Girl Before the Mirror” was the painting that caught my attention because at first glance I notice a woman adjusting the mirror as she is looking at her reflection; this is something I do every day. I gazed longer at the painting and the woman’s appearance seems to be younger in the mirror, perhaps she is reflecting on her past (youth). The dialogue taking place in this story is with herself as she is reflecting on the many years that have passed and how her appearance has changed. Her pregnancy has captured her attention to the changes in her life. The painting reflects the past, present, and future. The different colors, lines, and shapes tell a story about her development.…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
