James Rodger Alexander Sculptural Report

The sculptural piece I observed was also in Clarksville, Tennessee at the city’s museum. This piece is called “Equipose: Round About” and it was designed by James Rodger Alexander. The sculptural is a wooden “X” facing down with steel cables that are root-like objects lifting it up. On each leg of the “X,” there are five of the root-like objects. These root-like objects must have great strength to hold up the big wooden “X,” and also balance. In the middle of the “X” there is a plate steel and industrial felt. This large-scale sculptural piece focuses on the resolution of the conflict between opposing forces. When I first walked into the gallery where the sculpture was, I felt this conflict. The sculptural left such a strong presence. I was impressed by Alexander’s work and I found many different design elements and principles. When I first observed the sculpture, I realized it was an installation. This three-dimensional work of art took up space in an art gallery and was designed to transform the perception of a space. The lines of the sculpture can be described as organized because the “X” is two straight
The balance is radial because it has symmetry around a central axis. The central axis is the steel plate in the middle forming an “X.” If you were able, you could fold this sculpture into four equal parts. Each side is the exact same. When I first observed the sculpture, my line of sight went directly to the center of the piece where the steel plate is. The root-like objects drew my eyes up to the legs of the “X,” and then the legs of the “X” drew my eyes over to the middle of the sculpture where the steel plate is. I believe this sculpture can be described as multifocal because I can see where a person can first look at the root-like objects or directly to the steel plate in the center. The root-like objects defiantly have a distinct look because I can understand why somebody would notice them
