James Gaines 'School Replacing Detention With Meditation'
First of all, I am for replacing detention because many kids will not change their behavior about being out of control And will instead keep doing what they are doing because they are so angry. That is why I’m for replacing detention.
“Misbehaving kids are encouraged to sit in the room And go through practices like breathing or meditation, helping them calm down And re-center. Author James Gaines wrote from ¨This School Replaced Detention With Meditation. The Results Are Stunning.¨ First of all, With exercises And having to rethink their thoughts, students would then learn And know that what they were doing was wrong And that instead of having a subsequent punishment, they will do better in school And most likely wouldn't do the wrong thing

We've had parents tell us, 'I came home the other day stressed out, And my daughter said, "Hey, Mom, you need to sit down. I need to teach you how to breathe." Then, If students still had to go to detention it would make the parents day a lot worse than it already was because they would have to sit And talk to their child about their choice decision And think of punishments at home And probably school And the child's because they already had to sit through detention a whole lot longer than they wanted. Without detention, kids would come home from a couple minutes of exercising And breathing habits And could teach their siblings, family And parents breathe And take some exercises And time for themselves when they are feeling stressed. Then the whole family would be calm And could have a relaxing day without fighting, drama or violence that usually goes on in the house And could probably go somewhere for a day since everybody is relaxed And had a awesome day. It would work out at school if a teacher is feeling stressed or a staff member or even one of their friends if they are having a poor day. Then everybody’s day could go great And workout without stress being …show more content…
But Destiny was not isolated, suspended or arrested. She wasn’t even sent to detention. Before a “justice panel” After all, Many schools that have detention, as mentioned, would have given the child a walk to the principal's office or even a talk with the counselor. The person who had committed to doing a act would have had some serious consequences for throwing a jacket out the window for no reason And just deciding to do it. But when the school has something called a “ Justice Panel” where you take your punishment And do it when told And not lying, just like if you were in court. That would be so much easier because you are telling the truth And if you were in detention, you probably would have lied until your teacher or principal had to bring in the person who had seen you break that law And eventually you would be in more trouble for lying to a adult teacher about it. So without a teacher having to tell you that you did something wrong And you had like a mini court session And told the absolute truth about what you did And you apologized to the person you did it to, would be better because you would start telling the truth And knowing that it is not okay And there is consequences for your

In Lynda Barry’s narrative essay,“The Sanctuary of School,” Barry describes how schools have become a refuge for neglected children across the country, as well as how the ongoing budget, and extracurricular cuts are destroying their refuge. Barry grew up in a neglectful household, which she stated, “The high levels of frustration, depression, and anger in my house made my brother and me invisible,”(pg 1). Being a young child at that time, Barry could only rely on receiving attention at school, since she was nonexistent in her own household. One early morning, Barry arrived at her school before sunrise and was able to assist her school’s janitor. As she continued to aid the janitor, she was…

It allows them to participate in metacognition and realize where they went wrong before an eruption stage may occur. The students are able to feel as though they are controlling their behavior and not to get out of control and hurt those around them. It is extra training for all the professionals involved but if it is able to reduce student crises, suspension, and increases attendance rates then I don’t see why it is not a suburb addition to school systems to have for their students. The students will be able to feel capable and they will connect with you on a personal level. Those are two incredibly important things for a student to feel in your classroom.…

According to document B, the cost for substitutes decreased by nearly 76%. Schools would be saving money for separate needed school funding. Also students will have less excuses for late turn-in assignments the next week. During a normal 5 day school week, students have been losing interest in their work. There have been several cases of detentions inflicted on students who have fallen asleep in class. That can be changed if students have a…

Well to start I do not agree with the standard testing. All children test and learn differently. The standardized test can assist one child and hinder another. Also the 0% tolerance should always be reviewed on a case by case basis. Now most school districts offer alternative schools for those youth who have been expelled from the general school system. This alternative is more like a second chance if the student really wants to change. I believe that we (school district) should promote and support more qualified teachers and counselors this could get to the root of the disruptive behavior. Some school really just don’t want to deal with those unruly children and would like them to become someone else’s problem. Which the someone else turns into the tax paying citizens. There are several options to eliminate the “School to Prison Pipeline” If we start at the root and work our way…

Year round school can decrease the number of theft at school by having the building be occupied for all of the year (cde.ca.gov). “With less theft, the school would feel like a safer place to be in for students. Parents would feel better about sending their children to school if it is a friendlier place.” Year round school can stop some of the bullying and vandalism in schools (cde.ca.gov).With less vandalism and bullying, schools would be able to do more things and the school would feel safer. With less people who go to school who want to make the school environment worse, there would be a high school academic achievement average. Many parents use summer activities as childcare while they are working. Such as summer camps. But when the students are out on break when these camps are not in session, parents would be forced to find other child care at a costly price (“Year Round Schools Pros and Cons”). Year round schooling could also interfere with these camps. So students would not be able to attend camps such as boy scouts, girl scouts, and enrichment camps that they may use in their future lives because they would be in school. Another problem is that parents and families reject the year-round schooling and the schools lose the cooperation of the families. Year round schooling also makes it difficult to plan summer vacations or even to find family time. The students must constantly be worrying about homework after school and also want to hang out with friends. This causes them to spend less and less time with their parents and siblings. This family time is very important for the student and the families health. Students need the support and guidance of their family to stay on the right track and do the right things. Lots of family time comes during summer break. When the students don’t have to worry about homework and can hang out with their friends during the day and then spend time with their families at night ("Year-Round School Pros and Cons."). If we take away this summer break students and family would not be spending enough quality family time together without missing school and this is not good for their well-being or their…

Students may become more involved with school. They will decrease their bad behaviors. Not to mention the mood shift for the better. Many studies have all pointed to the same thing: later start times are much better for the students. Students will be able to sleep longer and feel much more well rested. That leads to all kinds of academic, mental, and behavioral benefits. Make schools better with just one simple step: delay the start time. By benefiting the students, the schools are raising a better generation and, therefore, a better future for all of…

School should not have year-round school. Parents will struggle a lot with everything. Parents would not be able to go visit family without their kids missing school. Parents might have different work schedule and would struggle to look for rides for there kids. They would not be able to travel as much. Students sports will be cut. The sports will end earlier and start later than they usually have to start and end. A lot of kids would not be happy with that. It will mess up parents and confuse them with their schedules. Buses schedules will have to arrange their times. Buses have other places to be but if they have school all year-round busses would not have time for the other places. Buses would struggle because elementry can start a different time and high school a different time. The kids would have to go by themself if there older sibling starts at a different time.…

A policy such as this denies kids their fundamental rights as a student, and I view it as an equality problem. Depriving kids who do not have a B average or above of the opportunity to participate in after-school activities creates a caste system that would stigmatize students who do not make the mark. If this policy were in place now, I myself would not be able to participate in any activities, clubs, or sports due to my grade average. Those activities are the places students make friends and find a safe fun environment to socialize and express themselves in the stressful pressure of a high school day. Speaking from experience, without something to look forward to during or at the end of a six-hour school day of tedious lectures and clocks ticking at the pace of molasses, removing these activities would decrease the students’ desire to want to learn or even be in a school setting. This could then backlash and drive the cycle of bad grades.…

School districts across the country use discipline policies that take students out of the classroom and into the criminal justice system at startling rates, this is known as the school-to-prison pipeline. Statistics show that these policies extremly target students of color and those with a history of abuse, neglect, poverty or learning disabilities. It is difficult to identify the exact reason for the pipeline, but the three main causes are discrimination, lack of opportunities, and zero-tolerance policies.…
