Writing Assignment: Analysis of The Adoration of the Shepherds
Sample Answer
Student needs to have written an essay close to 750 words. Needs to be an analysis of van der Goes' complementary use of symbolism, emotionalism, and realism in The Adoration of the Shepherds. While including evidence from the text, they should also provide original analysis and some additional art historical research. All assignments must include a Works Cited (10 point deduction)
Grading Rubric

Top Scores (A-B) - The top scoring students will do the following:
Written a well organized analysis of the piece including discussion of the use of symbolism, emotionalism and realism
Included there own well organized original analysis of the piece
Included extensive additional historical research
Middle Scores (C-D) - Acceptable scores for students go to those who do the following:
Written an analysis including discussion of the use of symbolism, emotionalism and realism
Included a brief original analysis of the piece
Included additional historical research
Low Scores (F) - Students score poorly when they:
Give a brief analysis while not discussing the use of symbolism, emotionalism and realism
Have failed to include an original analysis
Did not include historical research

Sample Answer
Answers may vary. Student has compared and contrasted the goals of the Mannerist artists from those of the Renaissance as related to the society they lived in. Must use one art work example each from Mannerist and Renaissance art as evidence for their analysis. All assignments must include a Works Cited (10 point deduction)
