Isolation In Watchmen
In the graphic novel, Watchmen we see many themes present throughout the entire story. Two themes that really stand out to me are the themes of morality and isolation. These themes help develop the characters throughout the story.

We see a strong theme of morality when it comes to the Comedian. His own moral code is questionable at best .He shows the audience how immoral he is by shooting a woman supposedly pregnant with his own child, and attempting to rape Laurie's mother. It’s also clearly demonstrated at the first crime busters meetings where he says there is no point in trying to bring down organized crime because nukes will be flying within thirty years. He has given up every sense of morality and takes life as just a

The book I read was Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, a book explaining the exciting story of a nineteen year old boy named Chris McCandless. Chris was born into a wealthy family with siblings; Chris later attended Emory where he would already start to isolate himself from others. Isolating himself from others would eventually cause Chris to make a journey he would later regret and not return from. This will show how humans are not meant for isolation and it will not lead into anything helpful and won’t turn out in your favor.…

The first theme I noticed in the second half of the novel was being powerless. Xavier is ultimately powerless in the sense that he cannot stop Elijah from heading down his path of self-destruction. No matter what he does Elijah will continue to evolve as the monster he has become. Xavier finally has to kill Elijah because he knows that that is the only way to stop him. Niska is also powerless because on their three day journey home there is nothing she can do to cure Xavier of his addiction. As hard as she tries to heal Xavier with her story telling, the morphine will eventually take his life. There is also a point in the novel where Niska believes she has lost her…

The second major motif is invisibility. Not only is it in the title, but this topic plays major role throughout the novel. The book starts out with the narrator saying “I am an Invisible Man” (page 3). This motif continues to appear all the time until the epilogue. The motif of invisibility goes hand in hand with moral blindness. While blindness has a bad connotation, Invisibility can bring freedom and mobility.”I’ve overstayed my hibernation, since there's a possibility that even an invisible man has a socially responsible role to play” (Page 571). The narrator realizes that being invisible may be a safe position, but he would never be able to make…

If one could sum up Watchmen by Alan Moore in a few words, it basically tells the story of the death of Edward Blake, Rorschach’s investigation of his death, and the events surrounding his death. Overall, Watchmen has an underlying representation of American society through the various masked vigilante characters and their respective attitudes towards government and each other. The quote, “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain," by Batman (played by Christian Bale) in The Dark Knight represents many of the issues in Watchmen. Rorschach, especially among all the characters, is caught between the extremely blurred line of hero and villain many times. This makes one wonder who the hero is, or if Watchmen has any heroes at all.…

Most of the textual themes were corruption, power, and greed. A decorated, veteran police officer with everything to lose succumbs to power (which was his favorite), greed (which was unfortunate because he had a good career already) and corruption (the entire department up top was full of dirt). The central textual theme in this movie however was the seriousness and effectiveness in a lot of cases of peer pressure and how easily one could be reeled in to various things, even when they have everything to lose. Washington and Hawke both had great careers, children, family, and a lot going for them on the job, but due to the lust for power, peer pressure and greed, it eventually tackles both men to the point that recovery can be long and hard for Hawke, while too late for…

Through out the graphic novel Watchmen written by Alan Moore, Moore tells the story of a particular superhero group referred to as Watchmen whom for the most part possess relatively human characteristics. In a reversed manner, Moore uses these characters to symbolize the different kinds of human beings in the world rather than the typical super beings so often created in traditional comic books (Disinformation). Like humans, characters in Watchmen all fall short of their own problems, failures, and weaknesses and struggle like every day-to-day people in society. One of the many afflictions that the heroes face, in particular Rorschach, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan, is their flaw that defines them the most, and that is their personality disorder. In explanation behind these claims of certain disorders, professional research conducted of disorders can be matched by analyzing the characters past, emotions and dialogue from the story.…

    Theme Of The Giver

The first theme that I have found in this book is the main theme of individuality. In this book, all choices are made, and your whole life is decided at birth. Things, such as love or art, are non-existent. Also, people in these “communities” cannot see color. As you can probably imagine, this is a VERY BAD THING!! There is another theme hiding backstage, however. This is the theme of making your own choices.…

As John Donne said “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of a continent, a part of the main.” Donne believes man cannot live a happy, successful life on his own without any connection to other living things. Loneliness and seclusion are extremely prevalent issues in the 21st century society primarily because we find increasing reliability to non-verbal interaction, rising globalization and reliance on technology. In Richard Matheson’s “I am Legend”, the effects of isolation on man’s psyche and overall well being are demonstrated through Robert Neville’s need for companionship, constant interior monologue and his various addictions. Matheson in essence predicted what the 21st century would be like, as there are many parallels between the novella and the lives of people today.…

The most obvious of the themes is that of violence, brutality, and torture. Tied into this also is the idea of injustice. Many of these themes are intertwined. Constantly the reader is berated with violent images, or descriptions of violence. These must be on nearly every second page of the novel. A good example of all these themes together is in the section called "Moderate Pressure: Part Two" This deals with a story of a man called Ghassan who was accused of an affiliation with an illegal group that could not be proven. Ghassan was forced to stand or sit in certain positions for hours on end, he was beaten, deprived of sleep, and restricted from medical attention that he needed. Continually he went to court, and the case was adjourned to later dates to try to confiscate some kind of evidence against him. There was no justice for Ghassan until after several days (approximately 14); he was released for lack of evidence. Ghassan suffers from violence (which is unjust), from brutality (one of the inspectors trying to induce a heart attack), and torture. Ghassan's ordeal is illustrated in both written and pictorial form. Likewise to this, there are many other pictorial examples and textual examples from front to back of violence, brutality, injustice, and torture .…

Comedians are allowed to speak their mind while regular people who work in their professions such as doctors, teachers, or police officers are not allowed to voice their opinions as freely because it’s inappropriate to do so. Maybe this is why people enjoy comedy, for a good laugh but also whatever the comedian jokes about you can relate to due to the fact that you have certain thoughts on the subject. An example would be in one of Kevin Hart’s stand-up comedy acts, he talks about how his father use to be a crack head and stole a police dog while it was on duty because Kevin wanted a dog. He also mentions that his father gets kicked out of the house due to the his mother not liking him on drugs, so every time he came to visit Kevin and his brother the father couldn’t go past the second step on the stoop which he never did, his feet always stayed on the second step. He gets into an argument with the mother about not passing the second step and during the argument the father does the dance that Kevin Hart says all crack heads do which is called the hula-hoop. Throughout maybe fifteen minutes of the stand-up comedy, Kevin Hart talks about his father being a crack head.…
