Isabelle Monologue
“Chirp Chirp Chirp,” The birds called. Isabelle’s class roamed through the El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico. They were on a school trip. It was very warm there in Puerto Rico. “The weather is so nice here,” Isabelle said.

“I know, it’s like fifty degrees in the United States,” Anna replied. Anna was Isabelle’s closest friend in her class. They had been best friends since Kindergarten. They were in seventh grade at the time of the trip. They had grown up so much since the time passed.

Isabelle, Anna, and the rest of their class walked steadily through the neat path, which was dotted with small pebbles. Their teacher, Mrs. Hartwell, assigned them to observe animals in the forest. Whoever could find the most won the challenge. Isabelle

There were dozens of turns. It was like solving a crossword puzzle. She didn’t know where or when to turn. As Isabelle became out of breath, and couldn’t run anymore, she collapsed on the dusty path. She began to cry. Her tears fell onto the sand that lay next to her head, creating a pattern that reminded her of her mother’s polka dot dress. Isabelle wanted to be with her mother, and hold her tight like it was the last time she’d see her. Maybe she wouldn’t see her mother again. Maybe she’d starve to death. “My class must be having lunch by now,” Isabelle thought to herself, “laughing and giggling, not even realizing that I am gone.” She wondered if Anna had even realized she’d gone missing, knowing she was so focused on her work. “She probably would have seen Isabelle following the deer if she hadn’t had her face stuck in that paper of hers,” she …show more content…
The grass had a wet, fresh scent that coated her nose. It was a relief from the humid weather of Puerto Rico. Anna dreamt and dreamt, thinking back to her childhood. She didn’t even waste her time trying to come up with ideas anymore. “How am I going to survive?” Isabelle thought as she slept.

After a long rest, Isabelle woke up. It was much darker than it had been when she first fell asleep. It was about 6:00 at the moment. It then hit her, she needed shelter. “Animals must roam the forest at night, looking for prey,” she thought. Isabelle quickly got up, and walked down the path. Would she sleep in a tree? A cave? What would she have to eat? Would she have to scavenge a dead animal? So many questions sprung up in her head. She was scared.

After a while of searching for shelter, Isabelle found a bush. The inside of the bush was hollowed out. It was perfect for staying hidden, and sheltered. As Isabelle lay down in exhaustion, she looked up. There was a beautiful red pattern shining through the leaves of the japanese bush. It reminded her of the stain glass windows in the church she visited every Sunday. Her mother always loved those stained glass windows. She would stare at them during the whole 3 hours they were at church. Isabelle once made her mother a sculpture on Mother’s Day. It was made of popsicle sticks and tissue paper to represent the stained glass

“Thank you!” they all said to the barista. They all drank their hot chocolate in the lobby, while they enjoyed the view of the mountain. When they finished they went back into the van and drove back to the cabin. When they were on the road and there was still enough light to see out the window, they passed a small cabin on the way up. A couple minutes later, they passed by a young woman, about 30-35 years old, with her dog. Annabelle noticed that the girl had a camera in her hand and was taking the picture of the forest. Annabelle smiled at the fact that she was just enjoying the view of nature with a normal camera, not with her phone. The rest of the way to the cabin, Annabelle was just enjoying the views. By the time the got back to the cabin…

The May sunset was red in clouds, and there was still half an hour to twilight. The dry slope was dotted with rabbits -- some nibbling at the thin grass near their holes, others pushing further down to look for dandelions or perhaps a cowslip that the rest had missed. Here and there one sat upright on an ant heap and looked about, with ears erect and nose in the wind. But a blackbird, singing undisturbed on the outskirts of the wood, showed that there was nothing alarming there, and in the other direction, along the brook, all was plain to be seen, empty and quiet. The warren was at peace.…

His mood shifted. He deliberately held out his wrist for the bird to take flight, and caught it again at the moment it spread its wings. He felt the plump shape strive and strain under his fingers; and, in a sudden access of troubled spite, shut the bird into a small box and fastened the bolt. "Now you stay there," he muttered and turned his back on the shelf of birds. He moved warily along the hedge, stalking his granddaughter, who was now looped over the gate, her head loose on her arms, singing. The light happy sound mingled with the crooning of the birds, and his anger mounted.…

"You forgot to check the traps," Father was chuckling, shaking his head as he came up to our hut from the meadow. He held between his two fingers a tiny feather-covered skeleton: a quail had been caught and gone unnoticed for days and the ants had picked it to the bone. He was not a big man but he could roam by himself through the woods for days with only a box of matches and a sharpened machete.…

It was a fine autumn day that Ethan promised to hang out with me. The leaves were at their brightest, oranges and reds faintly covered the ground, slightly moving in the cool, dry breeze. Light clouds scattered the sky as the sun was starting to set, ending the beautiful day. Ethan had arranged for us to meet in a quiet countryside, far away from the busy city. I arrived at the designated place early because I needed some space to clear my mind before I was ready to meet him. The singing birds and the sound of leaves high above in the tree swaying with the wind helped to calm and soothe me.…
