Sodium is an essential electrolyte found in salt. Sodium is a mineral that carries out vital functions for the body some of which include maintaining fluid balance, regulating blood volumes, nerve transmissions and hydration. Sodium is important in ensuring healthy heart functions and muscle contractions.
Some individuals have a higher need for sodium as it can be depleted through exercise (via sweat). If sodium levels are lower than recommended it needs to be replaced for a healthy mineral balance. Intense activity and exercises without replacement can cause an imbalance of levels leading to symptoms of dizziness, fatigue, vomiting and headaches.
