Article Review and Summary: I, Pencil
I, Pencil

Summary:
This was an article written from the aspect of a wooden pencil. The pencil first starts out talking about how no one knows how to make him/her. It states that it is a mystery even more so than a tree or a sunset. It goes on to talk about even though it might look like a simple object, it is much more complex with creation. Referencing each piece used to create the pencil, then tracing its genealogy to those who made objects used for transportation, manufacturing, texturing, etc of those pieces. The pencil then talks about how no one really wants it, but many rely on it. How no one had a big hand in creation, yet each step is more important than the last. The pencil this whole article was working off the idea “If you can become aware of the miraculousness which I symbolize, you can help save the freedom mankind is so unhappily losing.” When it comes down to it, the pencil was talking about the freedoms of humans. Without that, things such as pencils would not exist. Its final message that it was presenting was “Leave all creative energies uninhibited.”

Opinion:
I thought the article was very amusing, and did make me think a bit. Both from the point of view about the economics of a pencil and all that is behind the creation, and how its example can be applied to many facing the economic issues in the world. Going back to the pencil itself, I never really gave a thought before about everything it takes to get a normal, ordinary pencil in my fingers. All the people, money, and skill involved to create it. Something that as first glance, seems so simple, yet is so complex. How one pencil in Arizona, can be traced to so many other locations is astounding. It was a neat way to tie the beliefs of freedom and government involvement in trade together. I liked how it presented that you do not need a mastermind, yet just a bunch of tiny know it alls to make things work in the economy. You do not need Government or anyone else

Metaphorically, Henson described art was "a force of nature", sometimes disturbing and often irrational. By also referring to the symbolism of ‘nature’ and how it associates with its moral to be not meddled with, Henson is implying that same convention, should be implanted upon his own works as well. He again conveys his irritation with an emotive, extended metaphor, wherein art is like a “basket case at the bottom of the entertainment industry food…

His friends were not the only people to notice his amazing skills, Jared’s mother soon pushed him to go towards the art field because of his capabilities. This quote builds on the ideas of the first excerpt, opportunities. Opportunities make us who we are, if we accept them and use them as best we can we will become successful. If we don’t use them life will be ordinary, or worse. Additionally, Opportunities create our personalities, those who drew pictures and used any opportunity to do so at a young age love drawing now and probably participate in art competitions when the opportunity arises. By doing so their artistic talent increases, they get practice. and as they win those competitions they become known, if at first throughout their school and later at the county level and then the state and so on, until they truly become artists. Many successful artists probably went on that path. Bill gates path wasn’t all to different, first he developed an interest in computing. His school had a terminal, unlike most colleges in the country, which allowed him to learn coding. Bill Gates took advantage of that opportunity. His family was wealth which allowed him to purchase usage time. As these opportunities piled up he became an authority and successful entrepreneur in…

Specifically I would like to focus on the Artists sketchbook and pencil, in terms of being ‘things’ which unquestionably play a huge role in the practice of art and my particular field of study, Illustration, and has done for centuries. During this essay I intend to explore and discuss the ‘life and death’ of the Artists sketchbook and pencil, starting with the initial encounter and how an individuals life experiences can and do affect our personal and public perceptions towards these ‘things’. I would also like to reflect upon how, as practitioners, we interact with these two very different, but equally important, ‘tools’.…

The nature in which thought is advanced through a painting is a peculiar idea that eludes most average onlookers. Another work of art that contributes to this idea that art can add to the human experience is Frederik Marinus’s “Tranquil Landscape with Women Washing by a Stream with Cattle and Sheep Resting”. At a quick glance, this work is strikingly dissimilar to Nathan Oliveira's “Stage #2 with Bed”, but with a careful eye and further analysis, this painting allows us to turn a new page in an effort to extend our understanding in what the question is and allows us to move further in our journey of finding a concrete answer to the most abstract of inquiries. This painting, although completed over 100 years prior to Oliveira's is moving and striking in a very similar way even though their content is completely different. This derives from aesthetic. This picture is beautiful and tranquil. The colors are soft and the setting is dreamy. To this point, maybe the answer to the question actually is aesthetics. Beauty, if you will. The answer could be enjoyment. As complex and developed as us humans believe ourselves to be, maybe our instinctual and primal desires of pleasure are the true driving force for anything that we seek to accomplish. And even moving further, past just plain aesthetic, maybe we seek to find things that move us, and that is the human experience, and the fact that we are…

"The Discovery" by MacEwen is a poem about constant exploration and how nothing can never fully be understood. The author describes a world with an infinite amount of knowledge that will never be completely harnessed: "the moment when it seems most plain/is the moment in which you must begin again"(ll.13-14). MacEwen also uses this quote to illustrate the lack of observation in people. She dramatizes the stereotypical human trait that people can overlook something important that they themselves consider to be insignificant. The author then personifies the object of exploration thus allowing the reader to make a stronger connection to the theme of the poem—"admit there is something else you cannot name,/a veil, a coating just above the flesh" (ll.9-8). This quote also conveys the main theme of the poem. The author explains how nothing can ever be fully understood because there is always another thing that you may not be aware of and that must be taken into account. The quote contributes to the central theme of an unappreciated world that the author asks the reader to continually explore. This theme is also mirrored in "Pied Beauty" by Gerard Hopkins.…

3.) I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life, and stir with an uneasy, half vital motion. Frightful must it be; for SUPREMELY frightful would be the effect of any human endeavour to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world.…

People construct something from nothing all the time. A cedar box in woodworking, a sweater from nothing but string. Imagine how much work it would take to make a sweater or box. Sanding the wood for hours and knitting for what seemed like days. But why would someone do this? To make something perfect and beautiful takes hard work and determination to achieve. In Edward Taylor’s “, From Preface to God’s determination,” he expresses how the same attributes used in the making of a project translates to how God made the world perfect. He established the foundation upon which we should live out our lives. Every aspect in our world was touched, trimmed, corrected, or perfected by him. The beauty with which he accomplished this task is unmistakable.…
