Natural Insect Repellent
Background of the study
Rainy season here in the Philippines means bug bites and bug-borne diseases. Diseases like malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and such are caused by a bite of an infected arthropod. There are several ways of getting rid of these pesky arthropods and the most common way is by using bug sprays. Bug sprays on the market – including the ones with DEET (diethyltoluamide) – have been deemed safe if used as directed. DEET is an active ingredient in many insect repellants. According to a study in Duke University, DEET damages brain cells, can cause behavioural changes, and can have harmful interactions with some medications. It was also observed that it caused brain cell death in animals frequently exposed to or after prolonged use of DEET. Even though bug sprays have been deemed safe, we are still being exposed to chemicals that could potentially harm us. So, before you grab a DEET-based repellent, consider using a natural option instead.
In this Investigatory project, we will learn how to make a natural insect repellent. All of the ingredients are organic and can be found at home. The main ingredients that will be used in this project such as the lemon grass, garlic and eucalyptus oil are known to be effective in keeping those pesky arthropods away. Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a natural and effective mosquito repellent. It contains the natural oil, citronella, which is safe and effective. Garlic, on the other hand, is also an effective repellent because of its smell. Lastly, Eucalyptus oil contains chemicals that repels mosquitos and kills fungus.

Statement of the problem:
Is it possible to create an all-natural Insect Repellent using only organic materials?
Is it effective?

Objectives:
At the end of the semester, the students must be able to make an effective Natural Insect Repellent using only organic products.

Materials:
4 pieces of Garlic
Handful of Lemon grass
1 teaspoon of Eucalyptus oil
1 teaspoon of Olive oil
Water
Cloth
Mortar and Pestle
Bowl
Gas stove
Empty insect sprayer

Method
Peel the skin of the garlic
Use mortar and pestle to mash the garlic
Wash the lemon grass
Add a half a glass of water to the mashed garlic and mix
Use cloth to filter the garlic from its extract
Prepare the gas stove and let the lemon grass boil in water
After boiling, remove the lemon grass from its extract
Pour the lemon grass extract into a bowl
Mix the garlic extract into the bowl of lemon grass extract
Pour eucalyptus oil and olive oil into the bowl
Mix
Pour contents into the insect sprayer

Summary Too many house-flies are coming into people’s homes during the summer when they have their doors and windows open. This is a problem for the people living in these homes as house-flies carry diseases that they transmit onto food around the home. We need to come up with a solution that decreases the number of house-flies coming into the home while allowing people to keep their doors open. After considering numerous ideas I concluded that the best way to do this is via a eugenol based fly spray.…

sites were of similar surface area. Both mosquito bites and landings were counted as events. Measures were taken to ensure that events were not counted twice. Results: A total of 74 events occurred. The event distribution was as follows: placebo—40 events; special mixture—28 events; Avon Skin So Soft—6 events; DEET—0 events. Conclusions: When tested against a placebo, both DEET ( P .05); ASSS: 4, 2 (P > .05); DEET: 0, 0 (P > .05). Comparing each repellent against the placebo, it was found that both DEET and ASSS (40 vs 0, P < .0001; 40 vs 6, P = .0001) provided significantly better protection than placebo, but that Spec did not (40 vs 28, P = .30) ( Figure ). The use of DEET, ASSS, and Spec resulted in a 100%, 85%, and 30%…

These chemicals are now universally used on almost every farm and in almost every home across this country. They are “nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the 'good ' and the 'bad, ' to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in the soil.” Sadly enough, the destination of these insecticides are usually only a few annoying bugs among the thousands that exist (Carson par. 7).…

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane otherwise known as DDT was used worldwide for agricultural and public health purposes from the 1940s until the 1970s, when concern rose for its toxic effects on us humans and wildlife, its environmental persistence and its levels in the food supply led to restrictions and prohibitions on its use. Today DDT is now only used for vector control mainly in Africa and Asia. DDT is a potent insecticide used for Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS), being sprayed inside people’s homes and in buildings for malarial control. IRS with DDT being used as its main insecticide has exposed humans to high levels of DDT and this high exposure has been linked to serious health affects for humans, these health affects even include some cancers. Due to DDT’s toxic effects not only on our environment but on humans themselves, DDT should be banned for use against malarial control because of the high levels humans are now exposed to causing great health risks.…

Humans have been using insecticides for thousands of years. The Egyptians used unspecified chemicals to combat fleas in their homes about 3, 500 years ago, and arsenic has been used as an insecticide in china for at least 2, 900 years. Insecticide is a substance that kills insects. Insecticides are sometimes called pesticides. But pesticides include substances used to control mice, weeds and other pests besides insects. Insects harm human by transmitting diseases. Diseases such as malaria and typhus can be controlled by using insecticides to treat the breeding places of the insects that spread the diseases.…

Mosquitoes were sprayed with DDT in order to kill them off so it would cause a decrease the chances of a species getting any of the harmful diseases that they can carry. When a mosquito were sprayed with DDT it opens sodium ion channels in the neuron meaning they fire spontaneously and eventually leads to spasms and death. However when an insect becomes resistant to DDT they develop particular mutations in the sodium channel…

For centuries, pests have been feasting on crops and not only decreasing a farmer’s crop yield, but also spreading diseases that can even be deadly. Mosquitos, like the one to the left can carry many diseases such as West Nile and malaria.1 There are so many pests from insects such as beetles, which feed off of crops such as the potato plant (left), and mosquitos (left) to rodents such as rats that “even…
