Part I: Origins of Psychology

Within the discipline of psychology, there are several perspectives used to describe, predict, and explain human behavior. Describe three major psychological perspectives and name at least one leading theorist for each.

Although there are several different perspectives used to describe, predict, and explain human behavior I think the main three that stuck out to me and was more interesting to me where the Behavioral perspective, Humanistic perspective and the Psychodynamic perspective. Behaviorism grew due to a Russian psychologist named Ivan Pavlov. This perspective is based on behavior in which it states that psychologist should focus more its scientific studies on overt behavior which means that it can be measured and verified. Humanistic was founded by an American Carls Rogers. Humanistic was more different then some of the other perspectives it had more to do with the conscious side of clients other than the unconscious side of them. Psychodynamic was studied and developed by a Physician in Austria named Sigmund Freud. This was studied with unconscious clients but was focused more on personality and behavior.

Part II: Research Methods

Provide a brief overview of some of the research methods used by psychologists. Include strengths and weaknesses of each method discussed.

After doing some research and reading more about psychology and the methods I have learned a lot. Some of the research methods used by psychologists over all cover the concept of unconscious and conscious studies. For example the scientific method of psychology, is set up for assumptions, attitude and procedures. This leads to more questions in which they can find answers to so that there is more information to provide and prove psychology. A con to this method is that the open minded is messed with by “healthy sense of scientific skepticism”. The experimental methods are used to show a cause and effect relationship between changes in one variable and the effect that is produced with the other variable. The experiment methods provide solid evidence. However extraneous and confounding can cause inaccurate results in the dependent.

Part III: Ethics in Research

Describe two ethical issues related to research. Why is informed consent necessary for ethical research? One ethical issue related to research would be that the psychologist can use deception as long as there findings clear up their belief, educational, scientific values. Another ethical issue would be they use both humans and animals. Informed consent is necessary for ethical research due to problems that can accrue. It is also necessary so that they can review the results and outcomes. It is necessary to inform consent so that a client knows what will be conducted what may happen, the risk that will be taken, and the unpleasant emotional experiences that may occur.

Part IV: The Brain and Mind

Identify three major structures of the brain and their respective functions in the human body.

Brain Stem: The reason of life. The brain stem functions our breathing, our hearts beat, and our blood pressure.
The Cerebellum: Is also known as the “little brain”. It is similar to the cerebrum which has a folded surface or cortex. It is associated with regulations and coordination of movement, posture and balance.
The Cerebrum: Is the largest and most important part of the brain. This functions the thought and action. There are four sections in this structure. .
