“Fundamental and vital to all health care managerial functions, communication is a means of transmitting information and making oneself understood by others” (Borkowski, 2015, P. 79). It is clear that communication is a major issue in this case. Performance of an employee depends on his or her ability to effectively interact with the superiors, co-workers within the organization. Interpersonal skill is therefore an important aspect of communication. It can be defined as the “process whereby the individual implements a set of goal-directed, inter-related situationally appropriate social behavior which are learned and controlled” (Berry, 2006, p. 13). There was a very poor impersonal communication between Lawanda and her co-worker in the ICU.
Firstly, Lawanda did not know much about how to deal with the case if there were a code, as she did not complete her orientation training. She did not even interact with her co-worker regarding the practice guidelines, protocols, and precautions that are to be considered during a code. Poor communication between health care providers in high-risk areas can result in a number of negative health outcomes. This is what happened in Lawanda’s case. Learning to communicate effectively, minimizing stress, and effective problem solving are the skills that are required to improve communication in this area. Learning to communicate effectively helps avoid misunderstandings and potential conflict with others. It is the important duty of the health care provider to learn how to trouble shoot and resolve the problems and conflicts as they arise. ICU is the high-risk stressful area.
