    Diversity On The Show

Overall, the show does not challenge stereotypes, but instead uses them as a platform for humor. The bold message conveyed is that smart people are awkward and pretty people are not smart (with the exception of Bernadette who is pretty and has a doctorate). The elitist flaws of characters like Sheldon provide contrast to his intelligence, so that he is flawed in some capacity which makes him someone we would not want to emulate. Likewise, Penny is attractive, but her professional failures and lack of intelligence also make her flawed and someone we would not want to emulate. The lack of diversity on the show, and the frequent representation of other races as nothing more than stereotypes does nothing to improve societal perceptions based on…

Some of the worst Asian American model minority myths include those that characterize Asian Americans as invariably exceptional students, those that claim that Asian American often become doctors, lawyers, engineers, and pharmacists, and those that say that Asian Americans have language barriers. Stereotypes…

However, to say that the stereotypes of Asians are completely wrong would be a blatant overstatement. Stereotypes exist for a reason. As psychologist Saul McLeod explains, “The use of stereotypes is a major way in which we simplify our social world; since they reduce the amount of processing (i.e. thinking) we have to do when we meet a new person” (MacLeod). Close examination of the average Asian American’s values reveal Confucian influences. A 1999 study by psychologists Brian Kim, Donald Atkisnon, and Peggy Yan from University of California, Santa Barbara, identified 14 Asian values. While the researchers stated that, “We must recognize that Asian Americans are comprised of an extremely diverse group and that significant differences within Asian ethnic groups do exist,” they found that traditional Asians tended to emphasize these values: collectivism, maintenance of interpersonal harmony, reciprocity,…

The stereotype also looks at the socioeconomic and the jobs Asian Americans are supposed to be in. As Model Minorities Asians are depicted to be well off being at least middle class and above.
