In Cold Blood Perry Character Analysis
The author’s techniques used in the story In Cold Blood reveal a sense of fear and respect towards the person Perry is capable of being. Dick understands the “spooky as Hell” character Perry used to be and his discontentment as a child without experience of a caring environment.
The detail in the story gives an intimidating attitude of the character as a tough man willing to fight anyone, yet changed by a different surrounding compared to his haunting childhood atmosphere. Perry’s short temper turns on “quicker than ten drunk Indians” and phases childhood trauma “always wetting his bed and crying in his sleep” Dick has had plenty of time to learn and accept Perry’s flaws, but he still remained to put on an act of a strong man.     Perry and Dick are very two opposite people Dick is a very smart man who exudes confidence and malice who grow up in a stable home with two parents, he didn’t have the wealthiest family but he was supported. Unlike Perry who grew in a very unstable home having to switch between his parents because his father was a women beater and his mother was an alcoholic, his parents could barely support him so he was put in an orphanage where he was constantly beaten by the nuns who were to take care of him. Even though Dick grew up in a better environment he still came out a malicious and selfish person, even though Perry wasn’t a saint he had never aspired to be a criminal his dream was to become a Sinatra type singer and have a show on the Las Vegas strip, he believed he was smarty and artistic. One very important factor that Perry and Dick had in common was that they were both in major motorized accidents. Dick was in a severe car accident where his skull was almost cracked in half, while Perry was in a major motorcycle accident where his legs were ripped to shreds. These injuries are a very important factor later in the book. Throughout the book many examples of how Perry and Dick differ, such as the fact that Perry wanted to purchase black stockings to hide their faces but stated that there would be no need since there would be no witness left alive. After their arrest and their confessions Dick blamed everything and Perry while Perry was regretful and sorry he even said “I’d apologize, but to who.” What was also shown in the book was that Dick was a pedophile who preyed on young girls he even planned to rape Nancy until Perry threatened to shoot him.     Perry Smith did not live the happy childhood that he deserved, abandoned by his family at a young age he was forced to live at a terrible orphanage. “The one where Black Widows were always at me. Hitting me. Because of wetting the bed...They hated me, too.” (Capote 132). In this specific orphanage, Perry was beaten by the nuns that own the place. The short sentences within this quote truly emphasize the dramatic and horrible conditions that Perry had to live with in the orphanage. Sympathy is created with this quote because no one wants people to have to go through those types of experiences. What’s worse is that after leaving the orphanage, he wound up in a children’s shelter that was almost as worse as the orphanage where a nurse would nearly drown him. Again, the sympathy for Perry’s youth is created. Capote creates sympathy for Perry’s criminal record, by talking about Perry’s life. It seems that his record was an extension of the godforsaken environments in which he had to grow up in. At the very end of his life, which is also the end of the book, Capote keeps true to creating sympathy for Perry when it is his turn to be hanged, Capote describes what is happening with a certain kind of detail that brings out the good inside of Perry. “His expression was sober.
