AN INQUIRY ON IMPROVING HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS
WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
IN MATHEMATICS

Introduction

Mathematics is the abstract study of topics encompassing quantity, structure, space, change, and other properties; it has no generally accepted information. The mathematical aspects of something: "the mathematics of general relativity". It is present in any field whether Science, Livelihood, Health, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, Architecture. Therefore This case study should focus on investigating factors of leading learning difficulties in mathematics, and developing strategies for improving mathematics learning for students with learning difficulties.

Mathematics is the study of function and pattern in number, logic, space and structure. It provides both a framework for thinking and a means of symbolic communication that is powerful, logical, concise and precise. It also provides a means by which people can understand and manage their environment. Essential mathematical activities include calculating and computing, abstracting, conjecturing, proving, applying, investigating, modeling, and problem posing and solving. This study is designed to provide access to worthwhile and challenging mathematical learning in a way which takes into account the needs and aspirations of a wide range of students. It is also designed to promote students’ awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life in a technological society, and confidence in making effective use of mathematical ideas, techniques and processes High school students tend to have complications and they loose enthusiasm on in this field. As Galileo once said “The great book of nature can be read only by those who know the language in which it was written. And that language is Mathematics” adding, “Math is the way to understand all sorts of things in the world around us.” The main reason for studying mathematics to an advanced level is that it is interesting and enjoyable. People like its challenge, its clarity, and the fact that you know when you are right. The solution of a problem has an excitement and a satisfaction. And that is what the High School students are lacking of, they would not take time to sit and appreciate what Mathematics can do. It can soon develop “Math Anxiety” and “Dyscalculia” People with these disorders don’t have any fascination in numbers. In particular, there lack effective strategies to improve struggling students in their mathematics learning processes.

With this issues, The researchers we’re challenged to conduct a study on The Difficulties in Mathematics. Specifically seeks to answer the Objectives of this Query.

Statement of The Problem

This study is conducted to determine the learning difficulties of High school students in Mathematics and ways to improve them. Particularly, it seeks to answer the following queries:

1. How does Mathematics improve the Logical skills of the students? 2. Why do we need to study math?
3. What are the other contributing Factors that affects the learning skills of a high school student? 4. How do we apply Math into our daily Life?
5. What are the importance of Mathematics in our chosen field?

Significance of the Study

The research will determine the practices of a high school student towards Learning Mathematics. It will seek answers why students are having a difficulty in Mathematics than any of the other subjects. And how these affect their all in all studies. And to provide a possible solution for those who have learning difficulties in Mathematics or what you call Dyscalculia.

This Research will benefit Teachers through the simple ways on how to handle high school students who lacks understanding in Math. Also students can gain knowledge about their own self why they are having conflicts with it.
