The United States annexes Hawaii in 1900 should be categorized as imperialism. Once Americans settled in Hawaii they began growing sugar and selling it to the U.S. Americans wanted to take over their economy and government. In 1875, the United States and Hawaii agreed to give the U.S favored-nation status, which allowed Hawaiian sugar to be imported to the U.S without tariffs. However, in exchange for renewing this agreement the U.S wanted to be able to have a navel base at Pearl Harbor.
Isolationism
The United States declines to give aid to Hungarian patriots in 1849 should be categorized as Isolation. Isolationism is a policy that wants to refrain from having any involvement with global affairs. During Hungary's fight for independence the United States offered zero aid to them. The U.S was already involved in many other relations with other countries and decided to stay out of Hungary's fight.
The United States wanted to expand down west and also focus their attention on the Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny is the idea of having the United States stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The United States stopped all involvement with all fights and focused on their plan for the Manifest Destiny.
Intervention
The United States proposes the Open Door Policy in 1899 should be categorized as Intervention. The Open Door Policy is a concept in foreign affairs stating that all nations should have equal commercial and industrial trade rights in China. China was weakened after Japan attacked them and European powers took advantage. Europe had the upper hand in trading with China. The U.S worried they would not get equal access to trade in China and proposed the Open Door Policy.
Congress revoked Hawaii's special privileges and when they passed the McKinley Tariff of 1890. This forced Hawaii to compete with other U.S and Cuban sugar producers. Hawaii failed and a depression came about. After a decade of back and forth Hawaii was finally U.S territory. There were no further tariffs between the two.
The United States wanted the Open Door Policy put into place so that all nations could trade freely in China. European governments were highly against this policy, but after the bloody Boxer Rebellion, European government changed their mind and welcomed the open door policy and China maintained its independence.
