Immigrant: A Short Story
Nevertheless, as we kept talking I could only listen in fascination, our lives seemed so similar to each others. Our conversations were long, and laughter filled. We talked about our family and personal lives. We both became pretty close over the short amount of time that we had been talking. When it came to a more in depth conversation about of family, we both fell silent.
“I used to have a father and mother, but they aren't in the picture now” she explained as her eyes slowly teared up.
After it had been nearly two hours and we both decided we should return to our waiting mother and father.
“It was lovely to meet you Jac. I will be sure to call you later”.
We soon gave our farewells and we awkwardly departed. Finding myself walking into

“To Canada” I added, speaking under my breath, barely audible.
We looked at each other and nodded. Logistically speaking, I was confused as to what would happen with the Derby house, but my father seemed to have it under control. My father and I then proceeded to preparing ourselves emotionally for the night that was to come, hoping we would not be underprepared.
The main road was quiet and empty, as expected. We proceeded west of the village and found ourselves in Lineboro, nearly 10 kilometers away. This was all a part of my father's complicated plan, by proceeding as far out as possible, it would look less suspicious, especially with the dark night sky and the low sound of our vehicle. Continuing to drive through the silence of the night, edging closer to the empty countryside with every mile we traveled, we finally took a sharp turn onto an unpaved path that traveled directly through the empty forest. After some time, we came to a short stop, what was before my eyes was ever so reassuring. It was the widespread, open area of a dark and shining river.
“This is where I proposed to your mother Jac, take a moment and just appreciate where we

Reunited, it felt like I was complete, the part of me that had been missing for the longest time, was once again one with me. I found myself holding Mom’s hand for the rest of the ride home and never let go.

Epilogue: February 1, 2025: Montreal International Airport, QC. Ordinarily, our spirits were high, and we were incredibly excited, Rose was fixated to the city below. For the first time, we would be reunited with our grandparents. It had been nearly 9 years since we had last seen them. New leaders and systems have been employed and countries are now working to continuously re-build relationships. Our parents stayed home saying that it would be a magical experience for us to have the chance to reconnect with those we loved, first hand. The water was a beautiful shade of blue as we edged along the coast and banked right quickly descending.
“Ladies and gentlemen we are on our final approach, You must be seated” the flight attendant demanded. It was turbulent and the plane was fighting an endless battle with the wind, but we were both to anxious and excited to care. We were going incredibly fast when we slammed onto the runway. Everyone bounced in their seats.

You could feel the tension in the car. I soon realized how similar we are and how he had already gone through what I’m going through as a teenager. We talked about life and how we would help my mom if Sadie did happen to die. Sadie was my mom’s first dog so we knew this would hit her hard. When we arrived at the vet and Sadie needed a blood transfusion which is risky but my mom would try anything to save her. Sad about Sadie, my mom was anxious to see what would happen. While Sadie was undergoing the blood transfusion my mom told my brother and I to get the other dogs so they could say goodbye to Sadie just in case. Again, we were in the car and started talking. It was crazy because those two car rides made my brother and I closer than we had ever been before. My brother gave me advice on my friends, boys, and my parents. When we got back to the vet we were just in time, Sadie had just gotten out of surgery. Our vet has done it once again. Sadie was going to be alright, but we would have to keep a close eye on her for a…

My distant cousins whom I have never met welcomed us with open arms. I have not felt so much joy in such a long time. My cousins took us home to their little house with a garden. There is land next to theirs where in time we will build our own little house with a garden. This neighborhood full of fellow Czechs is on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River (Czechs, 2010). Cleveland has so many Czechs I feel as though I have never left home. I feel as though I am living in my old village. We are able to attend Catholic church services here in our native language as there are so many Catholic Czechs here (Czechs,…

In a peaceful sterilized world full of opportunity and dreams, I immigrated to the U.S in 2005 when I was only six. Growing up in an American world while being an undocumented child has brought lots of scramble and strength to my character. My family fled Mexico looking for better opportunities and seeking new dreams. I grew up with my two benevolent parents, who have always guided me through thick and thin, and always perceived me to be good, and do good. I have lived in America for almost 13 years, and my innovation of a Mexican American continues to change. I Grew up in a burdensome family with parents who always pushed my siblings and I to thrive, therefore I chose to do running start my senior year. A head starts to me meant greater opportunities and a finding of new subjects I have come to love for the first time. Due to my life experiences, I think of myself as a very mature eighteen-year-old, because I have always been very self-sufficient. I decided to be independent the year my father got deported, and have been working since the age of thirteen. Even as a little…

The night when my family fled Argentina for a new life, the sky was dark and the breeze was crisp. I still recall the smooth, salty air that swam through the tangles of my un-brushed hair as we sped off to Ezeiza International Airport in my quiet reverie. My father was young, and had not yet descended into an insanity that would come to consume my life. My mother on the other hand, was aged with a profound sadness and riddled with an eccentric apprehension of a foreign land. We arrived at the airport with spared time and waited anxiously to aboard our flight. I glanced at my mother and watched my baby brother suckle her breast. "Mama, adonde vamos?" Mama, where are we going? I asked. "Vamos a un lugar mejor de aqui." We're going to a place that’s better than here. Finally, our time had come to board the plane. Looking back one last time, my father knelt down on the floor and bid farewell to our motherland with a kiss, right there in the middle of the airport. It was a seal on our former life and it marked a march into the unknown.…

It is the dream of every immigrant to live a worry free life in a new country that can offer so much. A place where one can work for suitable wages, a place where one can raise their children free of the problems plaguing their previous country and a place where one can grow spiritually and socially. While some people might believe that immigrants struggle ends when they come to America, filmmaker Mira Nair, argues against this statement by demonstrating the struggle of immigrants over the decision of assimilating into the “new” identity and society’s beliefs, clinging on to past cultures and lifestyles, and in some cases with the thought of returning back to their country.…
