Originally created to help cure people of addiction to morphine
Common method of use: Intravenous injection

Effects on Pregnancy & Prenatal Development:

Low birth weight which can result in: language and other learning disabilities, behavior problems,etc
Poor fetal growth
Premature delivery
Still birth
Premature rupture of membrane- bags of water that holds the fetus break too soon
Born addicted to heroin which leads into being treated for withdrawal symptoms which include: diarrhea, sweating, high-pitched cry, tremors, and irritability
Small head circumference
Disease from the mother and be passed on to the fetus (Syphilis, Hepatitis, HIV)

Cocaine

Crystalline tropane alkaloid from the leabes of the coca plant
Stimulant of the central nervous system and an appetite suppressant
Commonly used recreationally
Side effects: hyper activity, restlessness, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, euphoria, some discomfort, depression, twitching, and paranoia.

Effects on Pregnancy & Prenatal Development:
Increases risk of miscarriage
Premature labor
Still born
Irreversible brain damage
Low birth weight
Small head/ brain
Cuts the flow of blood and oxygen to the fetus
Cause the placenta to pull away from the wall of the uterus before labor begins

Methamphetamine (Meth or Ice)

Psychostimulant and sympathomimetic drug
Enters the brain and triggers a cascading release of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin
Prone to abuse and addiction
Withdrawal symptoms: excessive sleeping, eating and depression
