If I Stay Belonging
If I Stay is a novel about the life, love, and loss of a dying girl. Skinny love is a song written about love in a dying relationship. Although if I stay and skinny love differ in the story they’re more importantly similar in exposition, over-all feeling and theme. In a rural town near Portland, Oregon lives Mia; a skillful cellist who aspires to attend Juilliard, a music college in New York, and have a successful future as a musician. She has a boyfriend, Adam, who's in the band and an intriguing family who loves her. Despite the slight usual struggles of middle school and adolescence, she lives a fairly normal and happy life. But on a calm, commonplace morning the phone rings to inform Mia’s family that the children will not be attending school. Seeing that the ground realistically has less than half an inch of snow about it Mia’s family decides to go on a drive. Traveling on a winding road suddenly screeching and pain overtakes the peaceful drive. In mere moments Mia's whole life was destroyed. For the continuing duration of the book Mia is assessing her life, some things are wonderful, but why would she stay when it suddenly seems hopeless. Mia must use all her strength, all her energy for the remaining people in her life when everything seems hopeless and withering. The song Skinny Love is …show more content…
Yet they are more importantly similar in overall feeling and composition. Both song and book have a overall lugubrious(1) feel. They're both beautiful and heartbreaking. The tone of Skinny Love matches the tone of the novel. They share similar strength(2) throughout the works. The strength they share is within the feeling and writing of both pieces. If I Stay is a well written book with intriguing depth and detail. Skinny Love is similar in this sense, the line “staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer(3)” is an intense visual.     The first and most prominent similarity between ‘Annabel Lee’ and ‘Porphyria’s lover’ is the way both poems can be interpreted, depending entirely on the reader. At first both poems seem to be happy and about love but as you progress through them, you find that they come to a rather grisly ending. In ‘Annabel Lee’ you read that her lover goes into her tomb at night and sleeps next to her corpse. ‘I lie down by the side of my darling...’ And in ‘Porphyria’s lover’ you are told that it was Porphyria’s lover who kills her and then also sleeps next to her dead body. ‘In one yellow string I wound, three times her little throat around’. Both these poems can be seen as true love never dies or they can be viewed as creepy, obsessive boyfriends who can’t move on. In ‘Annabel Lee’ the strange/creepy part is the same as in ‘Porphyria’s lover’. But ‘Porphyria’s lover’ might be seen by some might as sweet and the highest act of love, because Porphyria is actually an incurable blood disease in which the sufferers die an awful death. So by killing her he might have actually been trying to save her. In ‘Annabel Lee’ the fact that he spends every night with his lover even though she is dead shows that he still has so much love for her. Some people may see this as sweet and think it shows devotion.…
