The quotation on page 157 captures an essential idea of identity and a theme of speaking up for justice in Speak. In Speak, Melinda is an introverted girl who did not have the courage to speak up. After she was raped at a party and called the cops, she has not told anyone the truth of what really happened. Ever since, no one, not even her best friends, have yet to talk to her.
