Iconographical Analysis: Di Nardo, 'Adoration of the Magi'
The painting "Adoration of the Magi" by di Nardo portrays the three Magi approaching the baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary. However, there is much more to it than just this familiar scene from Judeo-Christian lore. When approaching this painting in order to analyze it iconographically, it is necessary to first look at all aspects of the form. If this aspect is ignored, it provides for an incomplete analysis of the painting. Once this is looked at, the iconography of the painting becomes much clearer, and it is easier to compare the painting to the actual biblical text from which it was derived (Gospel of St. Matthew 2:1 - 2:12). <br><br>When approaching the painting the first thing I noticed was the odd perspective. There are several vanishing points. Also, all of the figures seem to be placed on one plane. Because of this, the two figures that represent Jesus and Mary seem to be hovering weirdly above the ground. This, I believe, draws the viewer 's attention to these two figures, since they are the main focus of the painting. <br><br>Due to the influence of my culture, I recognized the figures as Jesus and Mary immediately. However, despite this, there are a few indicators as to who the people represented in the painting are. When viewing the painting, it is obvious that the figures of mother and child are the main point because the gazes of all of the people in the represented center on the child, including the mother 's. Also, the weird hovering effect also directs the viewer 's attention to these two figures. Both Mary and Jesus have halos, but this is not necessarily a distinguishing factor seeing as how there are also four other figures in the painting that have halos. However, the halo that surrounds the head of the baby Jesus has a slightly different pattern than those that the other figures possess. This lets you know that for whatever reason, this child is set apart from all other figures in the painting. So, even if the viewer is of another culture or

    This was commissioned by Palla Strozzi for his family burial chapel. The Adoration of the Magi marks the moment when the infant Christ was first shown to the Gentiles. The theme and the garments of the Magi were appropriate to a sacristy where the clergy dressed themselves and prepared for saying the Mass, during which Christ becomes manifest in the Eucharist on the altar. The frame recalls earlier Gothic examples but the forms are now unified by an exuberant vitality, combined with greater depth and naturalism. The left and right gables feature roundels of the Annunciation, while in the central gable a youthful God blesses the scene; and the prophets recline in the spandrels. In the predella, the Nativity, the Flight into Egypt, and the Presentation in the Temple appear almost as one continuous strip. Three small scenes in the arges of the main panel narrate moments in the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem. In the left arch the Magi gaze at the star, in the center the kings ride up on a road toward Jerusalem, and on the right they are about to enter the town of Bethlehem. The cave is evident, along with ox, ass, and manger, and the modest family. The oldest Magus prostrates himself before the Jesus with his own crown on the ground; the second kneels and lifts his crown; the youngest waits his turn.     Rona Goffen’s “Icon and Vision: Giovanni Bellini’s Half-Length Madonnas” shows how Bellini, and most noticeably his Madonnas, represent the ways that Eastern, Byzantine and Greek, styles effected the western Italian style. Goffen explains the long history of connection with Byzantium which made eastern art not unusual, but a popular style. Bellini used the popular motifs of this style to incorporate into his work; such motifs included Greek letters, a solemn Mary, and his use of half-length which all directly quoted Byzantine and Greek models. These details revealed the Madonnas to be icon paintings and for use in religious worship, not just for aesthetic pleasure, particularly his use of the half-length. This half-length style has a long and ancient history of referencing icons and other figures that were meant to be eternal, just as an icon is the vehicle for an eternal religious presence. This half-length style was not as popular as the full length and enthroned Mary in Venice, a style that Bellini also used and Lymberopoulou points to as an influence on Cretan art.     Buigiardini’s Madonna and the Child with St. John the Baptist depicts Mary with Christ and St. John. The three figures are arranged in a triangle formation, with Mary at the apex. This positioning was often used by artists such a Leonardo da Vinci and can be seen in his work The Virgin of the Rocks.     This Mystery Painting is one of many pieces that have been interpreted differently between artists of the 14th century. To begin analyzing the artwork, you can see that two figures are engaging one another in what appears to be a small bedroom. The figure on the left, dressed white robes is engaging the kneeling figure on the right who has her hand raised in front of her. The position of their body language suggests an conversation significant to the subject of the painting, as well as the figures themselves. To identify both figures, their attire and status should be analyzed first. In most religious paintings the color blue is worn by the Virgin Mary, who is always depicted in a long cloak. Another indication that the figure is indeed Mary is the book she is holding in her left hand, which represents the forthcoming New Testament and the end of the Old Testament.     Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31).     Often, the paintings of Mary and Jesus used mainly red and blue and are used interchangeably with one another. Red symbolized the blood and the martyred heroes, whereas the blue stood for heaven, serenity and calmness. Mary was crowned as the queen of heaven when she died and Jesus brought her up to heaven to stand with him in the kingdom of God. Likewise, Romulus and Remus would’ve done the same and bring their mother to live with them in their kingdom/city. In person, it is more stunning to witness not only due to the size, but also because of the vividness the painting still holds after all these years. It seemed as though it was done almost yesterday due to the freshness the content displayed and in comparison to all the other artworks in the area, this stood out to me due to the colors itself. Mignard’s choice to bring attention to the individuals’ clothing by surrounding it with darker colors in the background created a contrast that was not too harsh to view and the bright colors lures one’s eyes into it. Also, his choice of the lighting created a focus that draws the viewer in so they would not have to look elsewhere to determine what the “thesis” of the artwork is.     What caught my eye first were Madonna’s and the angel’s gowns. They shined as if a light in front of the painting was making them shimmer. The coloring of the skin on all the subjects looked precise and the rosy tones on the cheeks and eyelids gave off a warm feeling, which added to the overall adoring nature of the painting. Standing back one would never notice the small intricate details Francia painted but up close they become apparent. Francia went as far as painting the creases and lines within the palm and fingers of the baby Christ giving the subject a sense of realness. Up close one can see the small embellishments on Madonna’s gown and cloak. Around the neck of the gown and edges of the cloak there is an intricate white pattern. The hair on the angels looks like each and every strand was painted separately. Francia even painted the light bouncing off the hair and the crease of the flower crown creates on the angel’s hair on the right. As was common in the time period, Madonna has a halo above her head painted in a bright gold to bring emphasis to it.     We know that the subject matter of both Cimabue’s Madonna and Child Enthroned and Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned depicts the Virgin mother holding her son Jesus Christ upon a golden throne with angels at either shoulder. After looking at Cimabue’s work, it is debatable whether his apprentice Giottos surpassed the man. In manners of skill, Giotto’s more classical and naturalist style took on other stylistic components that very well exhibited a 3-dimensional space upon a 2-dimensional plane. In personal opinion, if the goal was to surpass Cimabue, then Giotto definitely showed prowess by giving his figure of the virgin a more assertive and realistic presence.
