R.J Palacio wrote the book because she feared that her 3 year old would react badly to a girl with facial birth defects while waiting in line to buy ice cream. She then tried to move her son away from the girl’s family so it wouldn’t hurt their feelings. But she actually intensified the situation. Natalie Merchant’s song Wonder inspired her to write the book.

She got the idea of Wonder from a girl with facial birth defects while waiting with her son to buy ice cream. The song Wonder by Natalie Merchant also inspired her to start the book Wonder. It also made her realize that it could teach a valuable lesson.
