I Want To Be A Social Worker
I didn’t always want to be a Social worker. I did know however, that I would have a job where I would help people. I have a passion for the law so naturally I thought I would explore that interest. I went into my undergrad thinking I was going to be a juvenile attorney. It was not until my internship with Safe Landing Youth Shelter that I realized I was going in the wrong direction. Working at the youth shelter I felt something I have never felt before: fulfillment and satisfaction.
Why do you want to be a social worker seems like an easy answer because I want to help people, but there is so much more that goes into that answer. I want to be a child advocate because I want to be that person speaking up for the child. I want to be able to say what a child is afraid to or does not know how to say. As I said above for much of my life I wanted to become a lawyer. Even though I have never had any personal contact with a social worker, they are not known for coming into people’s lives when everything is going well. I have continually been attracted to helping professions. It was not until college and when I started to volunteer did I fully understand what a social worker did.

I have a passion for kids and it’s that passion that fuel’s the flame of pursing this program. I graduated college prepared for the next step in my life which I thought was law school. I had already applied and taken the LSAT, but those plans crashed and burned. I didn’t get accepted to any of the law schools I applied for. Not knowing what to do next I accepted a job at my old internship. I went into Safe Landing Youth Shelter still wanting to be a lawyer and with a plan to reapply to law

Deciding what populations and types of clients with whom I want to work with, in the field of social work, is one of the most important decisions ever, regarding my career. From as early as childhood, I have always known that I want to work with children in whatever career path I embarked on. After deciding education and teaching was not the career I wanted to choose as my forever career, I always envisioned myself being a child and family social worker. I feel so comfortable with this population because I have always felt a need to want to improve the quality of life for families and children. I did not have the best childhood-due to experiencing homelessness, addictions and having to mature at an early age, but I knew the warm feeling that I received when my family was together and thriving was the best. According to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppresses, and living in poverty” (NASW 2010). Children are one of the most vulnerable and helpless beings in the world, so they need someone to fight for them. This is the population is where I feel I can help to enhance the social functioning of children and families the most.…
