I am a bartender. I’m quick with a joke and also quick to light your smoke. I observe everything that is going on. I see the old man sitting there he is making love to his tonic and gin. He also says that he wishes he was a lot younger. And also more agile. And life is too short. The business man is getting stoned in the back of the bar. He is doing this get rid of his problems.
The piano man is playing his normal melodies. He brings in a lot of business. The manager is always happy. He is always shooting the piano man a smile because the only reason why the crowd is here at nine on a Saturday is because of him. I get my friends drinks for free. I would rather be somewhere else. He never has time for his wife. Then there is Davy who is in the navy. And we all know he will be there for life.
Now there is the waitress. She is practicing politics. She doesn’t want to be a waitress much longer. She wants to make something of herself. We keep asking the piano man “Hey piano man. Can you sing us a song? We are all in the mood for a melody. And you have us feeling alright.” I can see it is a pretty good crowd for nine on a Saturday. The manager gives the piano man a smile. He gives him a smile because he knows that the piano man is the only reason why they are all here. The piano man makes the piano start to sound like a carnival. He makes the microphone smell like a beer. Everyone gathers around the bar. The order there drinks. Then they put bread in my jar. (Bread equals money and Jar equals tip jar). Everyone asks him why he plays at this little rinki dink bar. I ask him all the time why don’t you just try to go and become a professional. You should really try to make some real money.
