Humanistic Self Assessment
Initially, I felt a struggle to answer this question “correctly”. I felt as though I would answer it the wrong way even though this was an irrational belief because there is no wrong answer. As I mentioned, in class I wrote friendly, creative, emotional, helpful, and nice. I believe these can all be put into a similar cluster. These are things that for the most part I think are positive aspects of myself and what I like to think are a part of being a humanistic type of person. As we discussed more I created a sixth word, which was survivor (just as Saba mentioned during our discussion). This sixth word was relieving for me because as hard as it is to say I have survived a lot of trauma in my own past. In the past I may have wanted to label …show more content…
For me I believe that I have had a financial privilege because my family helped me financially during my undergraduate degree. They were the reason I was able to get my bachelors without working very much or taking loans out. This does not mean that I lived an extravagant life, but that I was able to make it through college living on a very strict budget. I like to look at it as my basic needs were being met. The privilege of health ties into this idea as well because I always have had health insurance incase I needed it. Although I do not readily go to the doctor only for extreme cases. It is nice to have it when you need it and I feel very fortunate that I can afford my own insurance now. Finally, the privilege of education also was something that I was fortune to have. My family was happy that I got my undergraduate degree, but at the same time they were not supportive of my graduate level degree. They wanted me to get working and help them out. So, I had to make a choice to take off a year and work to save money for graduate school and to help them. I also had to make the choice to work two jobs and go to school part time to survive. I had to learn how to use the privileges I already received to continue to make way for my own financial, health, and education goals to continue on the path that I wanted to

In complete honesty, I have lived a privileged life. I am provided with diverse opportunities, ranging from being home-schooled to the Catholic school I currently attend. Everyone has their hardships, and I certainly had my own, all were shaping and forming me into who I am at this point. I can honestly say my particular perspective has been remarkably determined by Kent Bellows Mentorship Program. It forced me to realize the opportunities I have been granted, take my passions into consideration, and most importantly, it shaped my aspirations and made me work for them.…

“Invisible package of unearned assets” is how Peggy McIntosh defines invisible privileges. Invisible privileges are special rights or advantages that one expects when they inform someone of their religion, race, or a group they are involved in. In my life I have been given invisible privileges in my education. In California, it is difficult to get into a good public high school because there are so many people in the area who all want the best education. At a young age you do not have many achievements so your admission is based on where you come from and what type of family you have. I was lucky to come from a well-off family so I was automatically placed above other students.…

Maslow believed that the basic needs must be met first before one could reach the next level of the pyramid. After this need is met, going up the pyramid in order there is security, love and belonging, esteem, experience and purpose, and the need for self actualization. Beyond these needs, higher levels of needs exist. These include needs for understanding, esthetic appreciation and purely spiritual needs. In the levels of the five basic needs, the person does not feel the second need until the demands of the first have been satisfied or the third until the second has…

The Encyclopédie, put together by Diderot, defined privilege as “Birth has its privileges. There is no dignity that does not have its [privileges]; each has the privilege of its type and nature.” In simpler terms, each person is born into their privilege and should accept it. Although this definition proposes that each class gets their own special privilege that makes everyone happy, this is entirely false. The commoners felt as though they had no privilege paying every tax, while the nobles told the commoners that they were exempt because their ancestors defended the glory of France many wars ago.…

A privilege is defined as a special advantage, unearned benefit that is granted to a certain group at birth. Race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and many more attributes are included as privileges. Privileged people gain ease in society because they are considered to be normal. There is a sense of entitlement for these people because the immunities are portrayed every day on mass media, in the workplace, at school, and with authority figures. This social inequality is very unfair because what one is born into is entirely involuntary.…

Privilege is receiving unearned benefits, that others do not receive simply because they are different from the group receiving these advantages or benefits. One form of this privilege is “unearned entitlements” this privilege is something that everyone should have. It is simple things such as feeling a sense of belonging or security in their everyday life. An example of this privilege is going to the store and not feeling like the store clerk is following you around to make sure you aren't shoplifting. It is not unheard of for a black adolescent to be followed around a store to ensure they are not shoplifting, or for them to be wrongly accused of shoplifting just because they are black.…

Each of the self-assessments were an eye opener to me and to what my life has been like since the first-time primary socialization has taken place. The results for my analysis were more focused on groups. Most of the words that I wrote down put me into groups with other people, such as, nursing student or bibliophile. The results for the second analysis were that I am in the normal range for self-esteem. The next analysis that I did told me that I believe we are all in control of our own fate. To me, this means that the actions I take determine how my life will play out and that the term luck is used by people who are too afraid to take control or do anything with their life. The fourth analysis showed me that in some situations my behavior…
