Human Trafficking In The United States
Sex trafficking is a terrible widespread phenomenon in the United States. Human trafficking ranks 3rd in world crime. An U.N. agency estimated the total value of human trafficking at $150 billion. (Tampa bay times)
The Government Accountability Office wrote that "human trafficking involves the exploitation of a person typically through force, fraud for the purpose of forced labor, involuntary servitude or commercial sex." Desperate people might go into debt to smugglers who place them in jobs. Their only option is to work off that debt on terms dictated by their employer. They might be sold by their parents and have no money to get back home or they might be tricked into prostitution and find themselves living in the shadows of a forbidden …show more content…
Sex traffickers don't care about race either, only that you are a woman or a child. Based upon cases where race was known, sex trafficking victims were more likely to be white (26 percent) or black (40 percent). (Bureau of Justice Statistics)
Sex trafficking is no different than slavery. Colonist sailed from America to Africa and abducted and sold African Americans into slavery. The only thing different about slavery and sex trafficking is that some of the people involved in selling women and children are citizens of the United States.
I think that the phrase “human trafficking” does not explain how terrible it actually is. I think the phrase modern day slavery is a way better way to capture what happens.
