How I Learned to Cook
How I Learned to Cook

I want to tell how I began to learn cooking, and how I succeeded in this. When I was a child, approximately eight, I wanted to make a present for my mother. She was working hard and came back home late. So, I decided to cook for her a kind of food named ravioli with cottage cheese. It, like other kinds of food, has its rules of preparation. I didn’t care about them, and I did what I thought was correct. It’s a funny story. Each time when I remember it I laugh. At the end, I had a bowl with a mixture of dough and cheese. But I didn’t stop to have interest for cooking. Later, my grandmother was the person who taught me to cook. She is a good cook. I watched her and asked questions. It was easier to cook after I saw in person how it’s done. I used the observation way for learning cooking. Then most of what I learned was just by reading a cooking book and following recipes. After a while, I became good in following the recipes. Every time, I discovered something new. Then I tried to alter the recipes to coincide with my own taste. There were a lot of trials and errors, but it was interesting. With time, my cooking skills were progressing, and at the present I know to cook quickly and tastily. Finally, I understood that experience of doing something is the best way to reinforce

As I got older I learned not to touch the oven because it was hot and I could get burned. By the time I was 7 I knew that the oven was used to make food and it was very hot. At the age of 15 I knew that the oven had different temperatures which all ranged from hot to dangerously hot however, I knew how to control those different temperatures. I feel like my knowledge of the oven came from experience and watching others cook. If I were to start cooking at the age of 6, I wouldn’t have had a clear understanding of how to control the temperature of the oven.…

By learning about a food, you can’t just know how it will taste. By doing research you may learn about what’s in it or how it’s made. When I went to a cheer competition with my friend, we stayed at her Aunt’s house. Her aunt made a different kind of pie, I had never heard of it. My friend and her mom explained it to me and they were looking up things about it. When we got to her house and I actually tried it, it was really gross. It was not at all like I expected.…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

The outcome of this activity, in reference to the textbook, is just a “snapshot” that gives me a picture of who I am today. The results are not to dictate our habits in the sense of our ability to learn, but rather recognizing how we currently learn and how we can open up space for improvement. In the criteria of Concrete Experience, learning with the help of our feelings, my results accumulated to an overall score of forty-three, the highest number one can score on the grid. This is the most recent cooking video that I made. I made the cooking video around eight clocks in the morning since I needed something to eat for breakfast. I looked around the house to see what ingredients we have. I found some cornmeal and I thought maybe I can make some breakfast muffins. I decided to make corn bread muffins because it is fast and easy. From there on I decided to add some fresh berries inside to make it more like breakfast food. Once it is baked, we can serve them with butter and syrup. Later when I edited the video, I decide to put Chinese subtitle on too, since my relatives in china want to see my cooking video. Instead editing the video with iMovie this time, I tried out a different video editor called Videoshop.…

For me, learning to read and write was long and felt like a drag to me; I took reading and writing for granted and never thought of the great advantages that every book had. It all started at home when I was five years old and my mom was teaching me how to write my name. In my head, I had trouble understanding on what I wrote but as far as I know that was my name. Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with bad writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…
