In 2009, I made the biggest trip of my life. My sister Siofra, my mom, and I traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to a dream place called America. We didn’t know where we would stay after our aunt's house that night. We came over with little money and clothes in our bags. Everyone in Ireland was losing their jobs, and no one could come to our restaurant anymore. As we stepped out of the Aer Lingus airport lane, it finally hit us, we were in America. I felt excitement as we were picked up by my aunt and uncle in their black mini-van. I wondered why my cousins weren’t there, but my aunt explained how they couldn’t stay up this late and how it was a surprise. I felt special. We arrived at their house in Hingham, and they carried my sleeping sister into their house and laid her down in the bed. As I was put to sleep, I hugged the phone my dad gave me and remembered that anytime I needed him, just to call. I needed him now.

I learned pain from having to live away from my dad for over a year because we didn’t have the money to be together. I also learned to appreciate your family and who you have near you, because someday they may be taken away from you. I encountered times where I had nothing and my family had to live in a basement and it taught me to appreciate what I have. I gained from the dedication of my parents, of when we had everything, to moving, having to leave everything behind, then having more than what we ever had before through hard-work. I will go on to use my experiences all throughout my life to cherish it, to make the most of it, not to cry over the little things, laugh everyday, and that the only thing that can’t be replaced is the people you
