How To Write A Short Story: Abby's Cabin
It wasn't only the last time at the cabin, it was also the last time together. Ever. The last touches, the last time her eyes met mine and created a fire so strong it would burn forever. At this time tomorrow, she won't be mine anymore. She will be someone elses. She's not going to mine or herselfs, but instead an another mans. Knowing that another person, a man, is going to spend the rest of his life with her, loving her and touching her, is tearing my heart to pieces. But what's shattering the pieces into dust is knowing that Abby is going to hate every second of it. That she has to suffer and not being able to do anything about it. She's going to spend the rest of her life being a mans wife. A man she doesn't love.

The misery doesn't stop

I fall to the ground and curl into a ball, throwing Donnie's stupid wedding ring to the ground. He wasn't my Beth. The room spun as I drunk from a liquor bottle that had somehow snuck into my hand. I look around, memories coming to mind as I look at each individual thing. The fireplace Beth and I made, its crooked bricks lining the wall of our wooden cottage. The small, fluff bear with splashes of paint on it we could never get out. It was holding a heart filled with the world "I wuv u" that Beth gave me. The "painting" that Beth and I made. A painting that had less paint on it than on ourselves at the time. I take a drink from the liquor, trying to drink myself into a stupor and realize that I was absentmindedly flipping through an old photo album of Beth and I. I let out a sob and fling the photo album away. I start to shake as sobs raked my chest, sobbing as though my life depended on…

One’s final moments often leave many questions. “What will my final thoughts be?” or “What would my final statement to the world be?” Reflections on death are often avoided because death can be terrifying but, if forced to think about it, what would you do in the final moments of your life? The author of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce, wants the reader to focus on his or her final moments and how they might unfold.
