How To Make A Lava Lamp

I. INTRODUCTION A. Attention Getter: Have you ever caught yourself being hypnotized by a lava lamp? How the liquid separates and form different shapes and colors. Excited at the thought of owning one, but then you look at the price tag - and put it back.
B. Purpose Statement: Today I will show you how to make a lava lamp using common household items.
C. Preview Statement: I will be covering 2 points t. First, the materials and second, the 5 simply ways to make a lava lamp.

Transition: So now let’s start with my first point, preparing your materials for the project.

II. BODY

A. Materials: To begin you will need the following materials

1. 16-64 oz soda or water bottle
2. Bottle of oil
3. Bottle of water
4. Food coloring
5. Alka seltzer
6. Flashlight

Transition: Now that we’ve gathered our materials, we can begin with our steps to making the lava lamp.

B. There are 5 easy steps to making a lava lamp
Step 1: Fill the bottle 3/4 of the way full with vegetable oil then top it off with water and about 10 drops of food coloring (or enough to make the solution appear fairly dark).
Step 2: Cut an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces. You can either ration the pieces to make your lava lamp last longer or add more than one piece at a time for more interesting effects.
Step 3: Add pieces of the tablet to the bottle. This will cause the mixture to bubble. Repeat every time the bubbling stops. Unfortunately, with this type of lava lamp, the effects are temporary.
Step 4: Put the cap on and tip the bottle back and forth. This will cause the tiny droplets of colored water moving around inside the oil to join together, making bigger lava-squirt blobs.
Step 5: Place a strong flashlight or search light under the bottle. This will illuminate the bubbles for maximum effect. But don't leave your bottle on top of a heated surface! Plastic will melt and you'll get oil everywhere

Transition: Let’s go over what we did today

III. CONCLUSION
A. Summary Statement: You’ve learned an inexpensive way to make a lava lamp using 5 simple steps of mixing oil, water, food coloring and alka seltzer in a bottle.
B. Final Thought: I implore you to try making your own lava lamp at home with friends and family, not only will you enjoy the look of amazement on their faces but you will avoid going broke buying one from the store.

Our project is making a lava lamp in a bottle. My group members are Erik Duarte, Isaac Sanchez, Kenneth Loya, and Nick Mahan. Our question was can you make a lava lamp out of household items. Our hypothesis was you can if you find the right items. We were right you can if you put vegetable oil on top of water and then put the food coloring in and the ad Alka-Seltzer. Our background info is that vegetable oil is used to cook, water you used to drink and stay alive, food coloring is used to make food colorful, Alka-Seltzer it is used to make head aches go away if you put it in water and wait for I to dissolve. We put vegetable oil on top of water. Then we put the food coloring on top of the vegetable oil. Then we put the Alka-Seltzer in it. When it went in there it pushed the food coloring up into the vegetable witch made it go slow so it made bulbs of food coloring so it looked like a lava lamp. Why did this happen because, well the Alka-Seltzer reacted with the water naturally so the fizz pushed the food coloring up. So when it went up it ran into the vegetable oil witch is thick so it made it go into bubbles and if you have ever watched a lava lamp the lava forms into bubbles. So that’s why we call it a lava lamp inside of bottle. The conclusion is that you can make lava lamp household items if you use Alka-Seltzer, water, food coloring, and vegetable oil. So if you want to try just do what we did. That is our experiment. Why this happened because the Alka-seltzer had a chemical reaction beacuse of some powder on the outside of the alka-seltzer so the bubbles carried the food coloring up to the top of the bottle…

A lava lamp is a decorative tube-shaped light fixture containing a colored, oily fluid that flows up and down throughout the lamp chamber in a manner reminiscent of molten lava. As the fluid rises and sinks in the lamp chamber it changes shape and breaks into globules of various sizes, giving a psychedelic effect of constantly shifting patterns. Credit for the creation of the lava lamp is given to English engineer Craven Walker who, in the late 1940s, saw a prototype of the lamp in a pub in Hampshire, England. This early version, according to the Walker legend, was made of "a cocktail shaker, old tins and things." He purchased the liquid-filled fixture and set out to make his own. Walker formed the Crestworth Company in Dorset, England, and over the next 15 years tried to build a better lava lamp. When first marketed under the name Astro Lite in British stores in the early 1960s, it was not an immediate success. Then, at a 1965 German trade show, two American entrepreneurs saw an early model on display, and bought the rights to manufacturer the lamp in North America. In the United States, they changed the name from Astro Lite, to the infinitely hipper Lava Lite Lamp and began manufacturing operations in Chicago. With the advent of psychedelia and pop-art later that decade, Walker's gimmicky contraption became a major fad. By the time Walker left the business in 1990, he had sold over seven million of his creations. Today, the company ships 400,000 lamps a year to shops around the world. Currently, Haggerty Enterprises is the only U.S. manufacturer of Lava Lite Lamps and they distribute them nationally through a number of retail and mail order outlets.…
