Chapter 1: Prompt #2: This is the first chapter of the novel and it holds the very fundamentals for the upcoming story. The significance of this chapter is the fact that we are introduced to the main protagonist of the novel, Holden, who clearly seems to be dealing with a lot of psychological stress. Without this chapter, we would not be able to dig into Holden’s background and learn about his drop out at Pencey Prep, him losing all the equipment’s for the fencing team or the fact that his relationship with his brother is not so good.
Chapter 2: Prompt #3:
4 Questions:
Why does Holden seem so close to the Spencer’s more than any other people in the school? Why can’t Holden stand Mr. Spencers condition?
Why is the author giving such a bad impression of Holden in the beginning, like he is deranged or mentally retarded?
Why doesn’t Holden seem to acknowledge his life is going in a bad direction?
Chapter 3: Prompt #1: Holden is back in his dorm at Pencey Prep and he decides to sit down and read a book called Out of Africa. However, he is briefly interrupted by a student next door named Ackley. Holden finds him extremely irritating because of his disgusting hygienic practices. Ackley also keeps on asking Holden questions, which further aggravates him even more. Then, Holden’s roommate Stradlater enters and Ackley finally leaves.
Chapter 4: Prompt #1: Holden is in the bathroom with Stradlater as he is shaving. First, he compares the differences in Ackley and Stardlater’s hygienic habits. They laugh and Stradlater requests of Holden to do his English homework, as he will be going out on a date. However, Stradlater is going out with a girl that Holden knows, Jane Gallagher. Holden seems to like Jane a lot as he remembers his moments with her. Holden does not like the idea of Stradlater and Jane going out.
Chapter 5: Prompt #1: Holden is drawn into a snowball fight with other Pencey boys. After they are done, Holden goes out with Mal and Ackley to grab

He acts this way because Holden is always alone and have no family to support him except his younger sister, Phoebe. Something that is repeated constantly throughout the novel is, “Jane keeping her kings in the back row.” This symbol shows that Holden cannot separate the past from the present time. Holden thinks this way because he was always necking with Jane when they were young. He also thinks this way because of his immaturity of always wanting to have sex and always wanting to be a kid instead of growing up to is an adult. Finally his thoughts always want to be with Jane, but because of his immaturity Jane doesn’t choose him. Therefore, Holden acts immature towards others because he has been expelled from four different schools and no one is there to teach him his manners and to discipline…

Constantly alternating between conflicting feelings of superiority and inferiority, Holden Caulfield’s unachievable dreams, delusional fantasies of grandeur, and erratic behaviour all lead to his slow decomposition over the course of the novel. Thus it is clear that his wide array of character flaws, including his cynical, depressive, and often unreasonable attitude and thoughts are rooted in some underlying emotional and mental health issues. Holden takes on a journey that transforms him from a dreamy romanticising idealist to a…

Stradlater “thinks he’s a real hot-shot...[and everyone’s] crazy about [him],” so he is “always asking [Holden] to do him a favor” because he thinks that “[Holden’s] just dying to do [him] a favor” (27-28). Holden “sees through [Stradlater’s facade] quickly...clearly...[and] unforgivingly” (Menand) and is not so easily influenced by others’ opinions of Stradlater as the “handsomest guy in the Western hemisphere” (27). Living in such close proximity to Stradlater, Holden has seen the true Stradlater, the one that is only interested in “very sexy stuff” and “madly in love with himself” (32, 27). Because we see Stradlater through Holden’s eyes, we, in turn, see Stradlater for a womanizing, superficial, conceited, phony. We wholeheartedly believe Holden because for everything he states about Stradlater, he shows it. Holden doesn’t care that Stradlater “[isn’t] too bad,” which is almost a compliment to Holden, because it’s what Stradlater does and thinks that determines Holden’s view about…

Instead, he only wishes to talk with her and she reacts bitterly about the awkward incident and leaves. Holden expresses this apathetic trend in everything he does. His carelessness with money is displayed by the end of the book, when he is forced to ask his younger sister Phoebe for money, “You got any dough Peob? I’m practically broke.” He also shows some early signs regarding lack of motivation in school. Holden reveals that Pencey is not the first school he’s had trouble with, he references a couple other places like “Whooton School” and “Elton Hills”. As school is seen as the guiding pathway to young adults’ futures, Holden’s lack of application implies his nonchalant perspective on his forthcoming…

In the novel, Holden got kicked out of Pencey Prep for failing four of five classes. On his way out, he decides to pay Mr. Spencer, his history teacher, a visit. They sit down and Mr. Spencer begins to lecture Holden about his effort in school and his future, but Holden refuses to listen to Mr. Spencer criticize his life. Holden abruptly left Mr. Spencer’s house because he viewed Mr. Spencer only as a man trying to criticize him, and not a man trying to help him. “You will,’ Old Spencer said. ‘You will, boy. You will when it’s too late.’ I didn’t like hearing him say that. It made me sound dead or something” (14) When Mr. Spencer says this to Holden, he is saying how it’ll be too late when Holden finally wakes up to reality. Holden strongly dislikes this and that’s the reason he left. That is one of the first instances of Holden judging and pushing away those around him. He then returns to his dormitory and his neighbor, Ackley, stops by. Ackley is described as a pimply nerd and that is the first impression of Ackley, solely his physical description. Holden focuses on his pimples, and his nail-clipping, and his mannerisms to portray Ackley as a disgusting human instead of focusing on who he is as a person. Because Holden is the narrator, his view of Ackley is easily seen as shallow and it makes Ackley look like an…

Through chapter one to five, Holden encounters various people. For, instance, Mr. Spencer is one of the few people Holden respects. They both care about each other. The concern Mr. Spencer through the act of lecturing Holden about his future shows this. As for Holden, he states how he feels a bit depressed seeing how weak and fragile his history teacher looked. He also says, “I’d have come over to say good-by anyway” (7). This demonstrates his fondness towards this teacher. Furthermore, it is evident that Stradlater and Holden has a mutualistic relationship. While Holden does Stradlater a favor, doing his English homework for him, he gets company. Holden knew he was using him as he states, “…and that you’re just dying to do them a favor” (28).…
