Tory is hard on his son because Cory can be defiant at times: “The boy lied to me. I told the n***** if he wanna play football…” (57). Troy declined to Cory’s football carrier idea. When they negotiated on it, Tory made it nearly impossible to keep up with. This made Cory feel like his father didn't like him: “How come you ain’t never liked me?” (37). When Troy didn't feel sorry about it, it made it seem to Cory that his father did not sympathize him. The main reason why Tory doesn't want Cory to play foot ball is because he doesn't want him to end up like him. Troy thought that he was going to go and be the best player in the Negro Leagues. He doest’ want Cory to get all of his hopes up and get far and it all fall in his face. Tory shows that he really does care for his son when he said, “You go on and get your book-learning so you can work yourself up in that A&P or learn how to fix cars or build houses or something, get you a trade. That way you have something can't nobody take away from you” (38). This shows how Tory really does love and symbolize his son. He cares enough for his son that he is wiling to give him guidance so he wont make the same mistakes he did. Cory only sees the outside of things. He only see the hateful part about it. He does not see the depth of what his father it really trying to teach
