How Is John Proctor Presented In The Crucible

The Cruciable by Arthur Miller portrays a Puritan society that at the time is unsteady. In common Puritan society, witchcraft is highly looked down upon and religion means everything to them. The play takes place in Salem, Ma, where young girls are accusing specific people of being witches, in order to get what they want. John Procter has an affair with Abigal, Abigal doesnt like Procter’s wife, Elizabeth, so she accuses her of witchcraft. Miller portrays John Procter as respectful, honest, and caring, this causes the reader to feel that procter is a good and trustworthy man. To start off, Miller portrays John Procter as an honest man. Procter needs this trait in order to confess what he has done. Procter shows he is honest whe he says to Reverend Hale “Why, we-have no fear of questions, sir.”(1055). Miller shows to the reader that Procter has nothing to hide, since he is an honest man, he will tell the court and the church the truth about what he has done. Also, he tells Elizabeth later in the play “I have been thinking I would confess to them,
This is one of Procter’s most important traits because it shows he not only cares for people, but he has respect of their values and posessions. Even when Procter is really mad, like in the scene with Reverend Hale and Rebecca Nurse, he still is respectful to them. When he says, “I mean it solemnly, Rebecca; I like not the smell of this authority.”(1036) he says it in a polite tone to Rebecca, while on the other hand he is very mad at the authority in Salem. Also, he makes room for other people, showing that he is respectful to Hale, he says, “... We are not used to visitors after dark, but your welcome here. Will you sit you down, sir?”(1055).
