How Is Jack Portrayed In Lord Of The Flies

Human nature isn’t perfect and has many negative aspects to it. The novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding includes many negative aspects like greed, ill treatment, and jealousy that are portrayed through the outcome of the characters. These negative views of humanity are shown through the outcome of the characters Jack, Simon and Ralph. The outcome of Jack portrays a negative view of humanity because it shows that greed can lead to violence. Jack’s greed for power led to ruthless killings of innocent creatures on the island. He was filled with hate towards Ralph and would have gone as far as even killing him. This violence was foreshadowed by Jack’s murder of the sow and his indifference to Simon and Piggy’s death. Simon was constantly made fun of, and had a reputation as “batty” and weird. He was different from the other boys liked being by himself. Whenever he tried to speak in front of the other boys, they made fun of him and “the laughter beat him cruelly and he shrank away defenceless to his seat” (Golding 89). Simon was an independent boy who usually sat by himself in the bower. He hardly tried to fit in with the others. Simon also suffered from epilepsy which gave the boys more reasons to make fun of him. The other boys took advantage of the fact that Simon is different and weak compared to the other boys on the island. Simon’s vulnerability made it easier for the others to make fun of him because they knew he wasn’t violent and would try to fight back. It brought out the rotten beasts within them.
