How Is Atticus Finch Treated In To Kill A Mockingbird
“There is something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when a white man is against a blackman, the white man will always win. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life” (Lee 295 ; ch. 23). To Kill a Mockingbird by: Harper Lee is a historical fiction novel about white people not being fair to blacks and segregation in 1930 in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. Appearance should not affect the way one is treated. You shouldn't be looked at by appearance but by legitimate actions.

The Ewell family is totally racist and does not give any black people respect at all, he never refers to them as their actual name, just nigger or negro he uses this word alongside many others in the book that are considered “evil”. Bob Ewell goes as far as calling Atticus Finch a “nigger lover” this just shows that he is racist because Atticus has no choice but to do his job and he is forced to be a lawyer to someone, and he wants to help him. He was hated because everyone knew he had a chance at winning the court case. Bob Ewell only hated Atticus because he would lawyer for a black man, against his daughter. Tom Robinson had a mob after him to kill him which was very racist, he was put in jail and killed when trying to escape due to innocence. Walter Cunningham had a mob to kill him, the title ties in with all of this. “It is a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 119 ; ch.10) Tom Robinson is referred to as a mockingbird because he is harmless and so are mockingbirds, “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us to enjoy”, Tom just did his work he was assigned and is being accused of rape, when he didn't even do

    During a time when black people were thought to be lower than white people, Atticus defended a black man in court. He said to his children, "I'm simply defending a Negro—his name's Tom Robinson," (pg. 75).
