How Is Atticus Finch Courageous
Atticus Finch
Atticus Finch is one of the most respected and well known men in Maycomb, Alabama. In Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” the character Atticus Finch is criticized openly throughout the story, but still well respected. He was courageous, kind, and generous.
Many of his actions throughout the novel show him to be brave and courageous, since courage is the main theme. He demonstrates this by the way he treats characters throughout the book. He shows true courage by defending Tom Robinson, based on what is right and what is wrong. He does his best to defend him. “But do you think I could face my children otherwise? You know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s usual disease” (Lee 188). I believe he is especially courageous when he stands outside Tom's cell, knowing others will try to kill him and then Atticus stands his ground. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. He believes in doing what’s right, whether others agree or not, he took a chance with the Tom Robinson case. Most others would not have tried to defend him. In chapter 11 Atticus says to Jem, “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person's conscience” (Lee 140). Also in the text it states, “Son, I have no doubt that you have been annoyed by your contemporaries about me lawing for niggers, as you say, but to do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable. I strongly advise you to go down and have a talk with Mrs. Dubose’” said Atticus. “Come straight home afterwards” (Lee 138).
