How Does Ender's Character Change Throughout The Novel

Sometimes ruthless leaders are needed when the world is in chaos. In the story, Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, the world has just survived the first and second invasion against the brutal enemy known as the buggers, with help from Mazer Rackham. Now, the military is looking at child geniuses to help them against a third invasion. Ender is the third child in a family of a society that only allows two children per household. However, in Ender’s case, the government approved his birth because they want in him a mixture of his two older siblings’ personalities. The military choose Ender to be mankind’s last hope to lead their armies. Throughout the story, Ender changes from a ruthless to a more caring character as a results of the harsh experiences he encountered while attempting to become commander of the army. In the beginning of the story, Ender’s ruthlessness changes through harsh conditions from the pressure in leading the army. While the argument between Ender and Graff took place we can see all of the pressure Ender takes in the moment they told him the simulations were real. For example, “He had played a great many games, at a terrible cost to himself. He began to get angry” (Card 296). This was one of the main reactions that went through his head after they told him the simulations were real. The old Ender would have been okay with the buggers ultimate destruction proving that Ender really did change from being ruthless to caring. Regret also shows when Ender starts to scream, “You didn’t want me, you bastards, you wanted Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it!” (Card 298).
